Program Overview
Introduction to the Physician Extender Program
The Ongomiizwin Health Services Physician Extender Program, established in 2020, aims to enhance healthcare access for Indigenous communities across Manitoba. This program is part of the University of Manitoba's commitment to improving healthcare delivery and making a meaningful impact on the lives of those in need.
About the Profession
What is a Physician Assistant?
Physician assistants (PAs) are highly skilled, regulated healthcare professionals trained to deliver quality care as versatile generalists. Collaborating closely with licensed physicians, PAs play a vital role in fostering health and wellness within communities. With a background that may include nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, or internationally trained physicians, PAs adapt seamlessly to various medical environments, ensuring comprehensive care for patients.
About the Program
At the heart of the program are the values outlined in the Ongomiizwin Health Services Physician Charter: safety, active listening, compassion, respect, humility, transparency, accountability, and a commitment to continuous learning and innovation. By embodying these principles, participants contribute to a culture of excellence and integrity in healthcare.
What to Expect
As a PA student, participants gain valuable hands-on experience by working alongside advanced practice registered nurses and supporting physicians in both hospital and community settings. Key responsibilities include addressing consults, caring for acute patients, and contributing to medical documentation, all while being part of a team focused on holistic care and cultural safety.
Clinical Rotations
As a student in the Master of Physician Assistant Studies program at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, participants benefit from clinical rotations that provide invaluable experience in both chronic and acute care. Learning from experienced PA preceptors guides participants through real-world challenges, preparing them for a fulfilling career in healthcare.
Our Communities
The program proudly serves 18 fly-in and drive-in Indigenous communities, alongside three hospital sites in northern Manitoba. As a physician assistant, participants are integral to multidisciplinary teams, providing essential chronic care programs and significantly influencing the management of complex health conditions such as heart disease and diabetes, while actively participating in acute care and consultation efforts.
