Program Overview


Bachelor of Midwifery

The Bachelor of Midwifery Program (BMid) provides the educational foundation for a career in midwifery. Graduates of the program will be eligible to apply for registration with the College of Midwives of Manitoba and to write the Canadian Midwifery Registration Exam.


Program Details

Our BMid program offers a solid base in midwifery knowledge combined with a hands-on clinical practice, allowing you to apply your knowledge in real-life situations. With internationally recognized faculty and state-of-the-art facilities, you will have access to everything you need to succeed in this challenging, diverse, and satisfying program.


  • Expected duration: 3 years (plus a qualifying year)
  • The program is offered on a full-time basis only, and you have up to six years to complete it.
  • We admit eight students each fall term.

Clinical Placements

As part of the Bachelor of Midwifery program, you will be required to accept clinical placements in various locations across Manitoba, including rural, urban, and northern areas. Placements are assigned through a lottery system.

  • MDFY 3020: Midwifery Clinical Practice and Interprofessional Roles (3 credit hours)
  • MDFY 3030: Interprofessional Practice I (6 credit hours)
  • MDFY 3050: Newborn Feeding: Methods and Contemporary Issues (3 credit hours)
  • MDFY 3060: Professional Issues in Midwifery (3 credit hours)

Year 4

  • MDFY 4010: Advanced Clinical Skills II (3 credit hours)
  • MDFY 4090: Complex Care II: Clinical Practice and Tutorial (12 credit hours)
  • MDFY 4100: Clerkship and Tutorial (12 credit hours)

Admission Requirements

The following are minimum requirements for entry into the Bachelor of Midwifery program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.


  • The BMid is an advanced entry program, which means that you must complete at least one year of university-level study, including several required and recommended courses, before you can be considered for admission.
  • Registration in the Bachelor of Midwifery program is restricted to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Preference will be given to Manitoba residents.

Advanced Entry Admission Requirements

If you do not meet the requirements for advanced entry into the BMid program, you may be eligible for admission to the Faculty of Arts or Science or another degree program. If you have not attended university before, you can apply for a program with direct entry, such as University 1.
