Program Overview

General Studies

The University of Manitoba offers a General Studies program, which allows students to take degree credit courses at the undergraduate level without applying to a faculty or school. This program is ideal for working and aspiring professionals, students working on faculty and school entrance requirements, visiting students from other institutions, and senior students.

Student Categories

There are four categories of students in the General Studies program:

  • Special students: Those taking courses for professional development or personal learning, students with a degree taking a few courses to satisfy entry requirements to a faculty, students who have completed previous university/college course work and those wanting to increase their GPA for admission to a faculty, college or school.
  • Visiting students: Those enrolled at another institution but wanting to apply credit for UM courses to their home institution.
  • Auditing students: Those who want to take courses for personal or professional interest.
  • Senior students: Older adults who are 65 years by September 1 (Fall term), January 1 (Winter term), or May 1 (Summer term) and who are Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents.

How it Works

Extended Education General Studies students can register for a course from most faculties provided prerequisite requirements have been met. Courses in professional faculties, colleges, and schools require special permission prior to registration. Courses are available in the Fall, Winter, and Summer terms and are offered on campus or online.

Academic Regulations and Policies

Academic Assessment and Progression Rules

Academic Assessment gauges student success at the University. Formal academic assessment shall be done following each academic term for all General Studies students who have completed 30 credit hours or more of attempts. In order to be in "good standing" in General Studies, a student must achieve a degree Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.00 or greater at each assessment period.

Credit Hour Policy

In an effort to assist students with academic decisions, all students who have completed 30 credit hours of study with General Studies will be required to meet with a General Studies Student Advisor before being allowed further registration.
