Introduction to the Faculty of Arts

The Faculty of Arts at the University of Manitoba offers a wide range of undergraduate degree programs, including the Bachelor of Arts General, Advanced, and Honours degrees. These programs provide students with a comprehensive education in the humanities and social sciences, preparing them for a variety of careers and further education.


Bachelor of Arts General Degree

The Bachelor of Arts General Degree is a three-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 90 credit hours. The program includes a range of courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as elective courses that allow students to pursue their interests.


Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts General Degree

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts General Degree, students must complete the following requirements:


  • A minimum of 90 credit hours
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours in a Major
  • A minimum of 18 credit hours in a Minor
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours outside the Major and Minor
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework in any subject acceptable for credit in the Faculty of Arts
  • A minimum of 60 credit hours of courses taught by the Faculty of Arts
  • A minimum of 30 credit hours at the 2000 level or higher
  • A minimum of 3 credit hours in each of 5 different Faculty of Arts subject fields

Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree

The Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree is a four-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. The program includes a range of courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as elective courses that allow students to pursue their interests.


Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree, students must complete the following requirements:


  • A minimum of 120 credit hours
  • A minimum of 48 credit hours in a Single Advanced Major or 42 credit hours in a Double Advanced Major
  • A minimum of 18 credit hours in a Minor (except for students in a Double Advanced Major program)
  • A minimum of 42 credit hours outside the Major and Minor (for Single Advanced Major students) or 36 credit hours outside the Double Advanced Major (for Double Advanced Major students)
  • A minimum of 12 credit hours of coursework in any subject acceptable for credit in the Faculty of Arts (for Single Advanced Major students)
  • A minimum of 81 credit hours of courses taught by the Faculty of Arts
  • A minimum of 42 credit hours at the 2000 level or higher
  • A minimum of 3 credit hours in each of 5 different Faculty of Arts subject fields

Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree

The Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree is a four-year degree program that requires students to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours. The program includes a range of courses in the humanities and social sciences, as well as elective courses that allow students to pursue their interests.


Requirements for the Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree

To graduate with a Bachelor of Arts Honours Degree, students must complete the following requirements:


  • A minimum of 120 credit hours
  • A minimum of 60 credit hours in the Honours subject
  • A minimum of 6 credit hours from subject fields designated Humanities
  • A minimum of 6 credit hours from subject fields designated Social Science
  • A minimum of 6 credit hours from the list of courses that satisfy the Science requirement
  • A minimum of 3 credit hours from the list of courses that satisfy the Indigenous Content requirement
  • A minimum of 3 credit hours in each of 5 different Faculty of Arts subject fields
  • A minimum of 60 credit hours of courses taught by the Faculty of Arts
  • A minimum degree grade point average of 3.0

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Faculty of Arts, students must meet the admission requirements, which include:


  • A minimum grade of 70% in each of the required courses (English 40S, Mathematics 40S, and two additional academic 40S courses)
  • A minimum overall average of 70% in the required courses
  • Completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours of university-level coursework with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0

Course Requirements

The Faculty of Arts offers a wide range of courses in the humanities and social sciences. Students can choose from a variety of courses to complete their degree requirements, including:


  • Courses in the humanities (e.g., English, History, Philosophy)
  • Courses in the social sciences (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Economics)
  • Courses in the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Courses in the arts (e.g., Music, Theatre, Visual Arts)

Residency Requirements

The Faculty of Arts has residency requirements that must be met in order to graduate. These requirements include:


  • A minimum of 48 credit hours of coursework completed at the University of Manitoba for the Bachelor of Arts General Degree
  • A minimum of 60 credit hours of coursework completed at the University of Manitoba for the Bachelor of Arts Advanced and Honours degrees

Degree with Distinction

Students who graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree may be eligible to receive their degree "with distinction" if they meet the following requirements:


  • A minimum degree grade point average of 3.80
  • Completion of a minimum of 60 credit hours of coursework at the University of Manitoba for the Bachelor of Arts General Degree
  • Completion of a minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework at the University of Manitoba for the Bachelor of Arts Advanced Degree

University Gold Medal

The University of Manitoba awards a gold medal to the student who achieves the highest grade point average in their faculty or school. To be eligible for the gold medal, students must:


  • Have completed a minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework at the University of Manitoba
  • Have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.85
  • Have completed all degree requirements within the normal timeframe for their program

Program Medals

The Faculty of Arts awards program medals to students who achieve the highest grade point average in their program. To be eligible for a program medal, students must:


  • Have completed a minimum of 90 credit hours of coursework at the University of Manitoba
  • Have achieved a minimum grade point average of 3.75
  • Have completed all degree requirements within the normal timeframe for their program

Evaluation of Undergraduate Student Coursework

The University of Manitoba evaluates undergraduate student coursework using a letter grade system. The letter grades are assigned as follows:


  • A+ (4.5)
  • A (4.0)
  • B+ (3.5)
  • B (3.0)
  • C+ (2.5)
  • C (2.0)
  • D (1.0)
  • F (0)

Academic Integrity

The University of Manitoba takes academic integrity seriously and has policies in place to prevent academic misconduct. Academic misconduct includes:


  • Plagiarism
  • Cheating on quizzes, tests, or final examinations
  • Inappropriate collaboration
  • Academic fraud
  • Impersonation
  • Contract cheating
  • Duplicate submission
  • Unauthorized content generation

Appeals of Grades

Students who disagree with their grades can appeal to the Senate Committee on Appeals. The appeal must be made in writing and must include the reason for the appeal and any supporting documentation.


Attendance and Withdrawal

Regular attendance is expected of all students in all courses. Students who are absent from classes without a valid reason may be debarred from the course. Students can withdraw from courses voluntarily, but must do so by the deadline date.


Graduation and Convocation

Students who have completed all degree requirements are eligible to graduate. The University of Manitoba holds convocation ceremonies in May/June and October. Students who graduate at the end of the Fall term are invited to attend the May/June ceremonies.
