Midwifery Program
The Midwifery program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and judgment required to practice as a primary care provider in midwifery. The program includes a series of courses that cover various aspects of midwifery, including the midwifery model of care, bioscience, pharmacology, and clinical skills.
Course Descriptions
- MDFY 2010: Preparation for Professional Midwifery Education and Practice (3 credits) This course provides an understanding of the midwifery model of care in remote, rural, and urban settings in Manitoba and contrasts this model with those in other Canadian jurisdictions and internationally.
- MDFY 2020: Bioscience for Midwives (3 credits) This course provides an overview of the biochemical and microbiological concepts that underlie screening and diagnostic testing in the childbearing year.
- MDFY 2030: Pharmacology for Midwives (3 credits) This course introduces concepts of pharmacotherapeutics and provides an overview of basic concepts in pharmacology relevant to the practice of midwifery.
- MDFY 2040: Normal Childbearing Skills (6 credits) This course provides students with fundamental theory, assessment skills, and psychomotor skills to support clinical practice in the normal childbearing year.
- MDFY 2090: Normal Childbearing Clinical Practice and Tutorial (12 credits) This clinical practice course enables students to apply the knowledge, skills, and judgment related to the normal childbearing process to clinical practice.
- MDFY 2440: Human Reproductive Physiology (3 credits) This course provides an in-depth understanding of human reproduction with particular emphasis on intrinsic control mechanisms and extrinsic methods of regulation of reproduction.
- MDFY 3010: Advanced Clinical Skills I (3 credits) This course provides students with a series of lectures and practical skills labs to build on clinical skills acquired in previous MDFY courses.
- MDFY 3020: Midwifery Clinical Practice and Interprofessional Roles (3 credits) This clinical practice experience focuses on preparing the student for their interprofessional placements.
- MDFY 3030: Interprofessional Practice I (6 credits) This clinical practice course provides students with the opportunity to develop their skills in the provision of culturally safe care in culturally diverse settings.
- MDFY 3032: Interprofessional Practice II (6 credits) This clinical practice course enables the student to advance their skills in the provision of care during the childbearing year in interprofessional clinical settings.
- MDFY 3050: Newborn Feeding: Methods and Contemporary Issues (3 credits) This course enables the student to obtain knowledge related to all methods of newborn feeding and the evidence related to the outcomes of each method.
- MDFY 3060: Professional Issues in Midwifery (3 credits) This course enables the student to engage in a critical analysis of ethical, professional, and emerging trends in the profession of midwifery.
- MDFY 3090: Complex Care I Clinical Practice and Tutorial (12 credits) This clinical practice course provides students with the knowledge and skills to begin to manage pathological and high-risk conditions of pregnancy, birth, and newborn care.
- MDFY 4010: Advanced Clinical Skills II (3 credits) This course provides students with a series of lectures and practical skills labs to build on clinical skills acquired in previous MDFY courses.
- MDFY 4090: Complex Care II Clinical Practice and Tutorial (12 credits) This clinical practice course enables the student to apply knowledge and skills related to the management of more complex and emergency care scenarios in the clinical setting.
- MDFY 4100: Clerkship and Tutorial (12 credits) This clinical practice course enables the student to demonstrate entry-level competence as a primary care provider in midwifery practice.
Prerequisites and Requirements
- A minimum grade of C is required for all MDFY courses unless otherwise indicated.
