Environmental Design, B.Env.D. Architecture Master Preparation Option (ED AMP 1 and ED AMP 2)
Program Overview
Environmental Design Program: Architecture Master Preparation Option (ED AMP)
The Faculty of Architecture offers an Environmental Design Program: Architecture Master Preparation Option (ED AMP) for students who have a recognized first degree in either a non-design or a design-related field of study and who have an interest in pursuing the graduate degree in Architecture.
Overview
The ED AMP is designed for students who wish to pursue a graduate degree in Architecture but do not have a background in design. The program provides students with the necessary foundation in design principles, theories, and practices to prepare them for the Master of Architecture program.
Admission Requirements
To be considered for admission into the ED AMP, applicants must have completed a recognized first degree in either a non-design or a design-related field of study. Admission is competitive and limited, and students will be admitted on the basis of an annual selection process.
Program Structure
The ED AMP is a two-year program that consists of 66 credit hours of coursework. The program is divided into two streams:
- Stream One (ED AMP 1): This stream is designed for students who have no formal design education and have a recognized undergraduate first degree. Students in this stream must complete 66 credit hours of coursework, including the ED3 and ED4 Architecture Master Preparation Option.
- Stream Two (ED AMP 2): This stream is designed for students who already have an undergraduate design degree in an allied design field, such as Interior Design or Landscape Architecture, and wish to pursue studies in a graduate degree in Architecture. Students in this stream will be considered on a case-by-case basis for placement into the fourth year of Environmental Design Architecture Option.
Degree Requirements
To be eligible for the degree of Bachelor of Environmental Design, a student must successfully complete 129 credit hours of coursework with a passing grade in each course and have attained a Degree Grade Point Average (DGPA) of at least 2.0.
Courses
The ED AMP program includes a range of courses that provide students with a foundation in design principles, theories, and practices. Some of the courses included in the program are:
- EVDS 1600: Introduction to Environmental Design
- EVDS 1602: Visual Literacy
- EVDS 1680: Environmental Technology
- EVDS 2100: Urban Media Lab
- EVDS 2200: Ecology and Design
- EVDS 2300: Materials, Structures and Assemblies
- EVDS 2400: Visual Media 1
- EVDS 2500: Design Studio 1

Academic Regulations
The ED AMP program is subject to the academic regulations of the Faculty of Architecture, which include regulations related to admission, academic standing, degree requirements, and graduation.
Graduation
Students who complete the ED AMP program are eligible to graduate with a Bachelor of Environmental Design degree. The graduation requirements include completing all required coursework, achieving a minimum DGPA of 2.0, and meeting all other academic regulations of the Faculty of Architecture.
Convocation
Convocation ceremonies are held in May/June and October of each year. Graduating students are encouraged to attend with their families and friends to mark the successful conclusion of their program of studies.
