Program Overview
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (MDent)
The Master of Dentistry in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program is designed to prepare students to become qualified, ethical, and proficient Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons. As graduates, they will be well-equipped for a career in clinical practice, academia, or research, both in Canada and internationally.
Program Details
The Department of Dental Diagnostic and Surgical Sciences offers graduate instruction and research leading to a Master of Dentistry degree in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The program includes a four-year hospital residency, after which a postgraduate training certificate is awarded.
- Expected duration: 4 years
- To complete the MDent in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, students will:
- Complete 48 credit hours of coursework
- Finish all clinical off-service rotations and assignments as outlined in the hospital residency training
- Write an essay or conduct a research project
Tuition and Fees
Students will pay the yearly program fee for each year they are registered.
Stipend Information
As residents, students will be members of the Professional Association of Residents and Interns of Manitoba (PARIM). The approximate stipend is $60,000 per year.
Accreditation
The program is fully accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC) and recognized by the American Dental Association. Graduates are eligible for examinations by:
- The Royal College of Dentists of Canada (RCDC)
- National Dental Specialty Exams (NDSE)
- American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS)

Students will experience hands-on learning with progressive training rotations at Health Sciences Centre in:
- Anesthesia
- Otolaryngology
- Internal Medicine
- Surgical Oncology
- Head and Neck Surgery
- Intensive Care
- Emergency Room Medicine
- Plastic Surgery
Essay/Research Project
In their fourth year, students will complete and present a research project or essay in a chosen area, supported by additional coursework if needed.

Admission Requirements
The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the MDent in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program.
- Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- Possess a dental qualification that makes you eligible for licensure in a province of Canada.
- Hold a National Dental Examining Board of Canada Certificate.
- Comply with provincial requirements for licensing of dental interns and residents.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have completed a one-year hospital residency program.
Additional Requirements
In addition to the admission requirements listed above, all applicants must meet the minimum English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.

The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery research focuses on:

- Temporomandibular disorders
- Tissue regeneration and healing enhancement

- Maxillofacial trauma
Clinical Experience
The clinical program provides comprehensive training in all the major areas generally included within the scope of practice of an oral and maxillofacial surgery.
Financial Supports
Numerous funding opportunities are available to dentistry graduate students, and to Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies students, to support academic and research goals. Residents receive a stipend including benefits in accordance with the current collective agreement.
