President's Student Leadership Program
The President's Student Leadership Program (PSLP) is Manitoba's premier leadership program, open to students from all faculties and Manitoba post-secondary institutions. It is a unique-in-Canada immersive learning opportunity that brings together a cohort of students each year from across faculties, post-secondary institutions, interests, backgrounds, and regions of the province to build their leadership potential.
Program Description
PSLP is the flagship program of the James W. Burns Leadership Institute, funded through a visionary endowment to the University of Manitoba beginning in 2019. The program provides a unique opportunity for students to develop their leadership knowledge and skills, making positive change in their environment and serving their career in any field.
Admission Requirements
Selection for the President's Student Leadership Program is based on a combination of leadership experience and potential. To be admitted to the program, students must meet the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a post-secondary program at a public university or college in the province of Manitoba.
- Be at least halfway through their program of study but not in their graduating year.
- Students must be enrolled in a program that is a minimum of two years duration, with the exception of 12-month master's programs.
- Students in a two-year program should apply while in the second half of their first year of post-secondary study.
- Students enrolled in the Faculty of Law may apply in the first or second year of the program.
- Students in the process of transferring to a different program or post-secondary institution will also be considered.
- Be available to attend all portions of the program.
Application Criteria
The program is looking for students who demonstrate:
- Active commitment: A demonstrated ability to take initiative and develop, reflect on, and question their own perspectives through learning from multiple viewpoints.
- Social skills: An ability to collaborate with and motivate others, work in a team to achieve common understanding, express themselves in different situations and to different people, and listen to and value others' opinions, experiences, and knowledge bases.
- Initiative and imagination: The potential to recognize where change is needed and work with others to pursue it.
- Intellectual curiosity: A genuine interest in learning about the world around them and the ability to recognize details and understand the complexity of issues facing today's society.
- Motivation: Passion, ability, and drive to actively engage in the program, including a plan for how they intend to use what they learn in their career and community after program completion.
Program Funding
The James W. Burns Leadership Institute at the I.H. Asper School of Business has been created through the visionary investment from Canada Life, IG Wealth Management, and the Power Corporation of Canada, as well as the Province of Manitoba.
