Program Overview

Nephrology Residency Program

The Nephrology Subspecialty Education Program is a two-year residency accredited by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. This program is designed to prepare physicians for rewarding careers in clinical and academic nephrology. Trainees gain expertise in managing a broad spectrum of kidney-related conditions across diverse settings, from university-affiliated hospitals to community-based practices.

Program Details

  • The program encompasses comprehensive instruction in all aspects of nephrology, including outpatient clinics, inpatient care, and specialized management of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD).
  • Training occurs primarily at two leading health-care facilities—Health Sciences Centre and St. Boniface Hospital—offering fellows the opportunity to learn from a multidisciplinary team in dynamic clinical environments.
  • The expected duration of the program is 2 years.

Expert Faculty and Staff

  • The section of nephrology consists of 30 full-time members and one part-time member.
  • Their clinical interests span the gamut of nephrology and include areas of general consultative nephrology, hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and renal transplantation.
  • In addition, section members are actively involved in research as well as other areas of non-clinical academic activity.
  • The Section of Nephrology hosts one of the world's premier programs for interventional nephrology and trains fellows in PD catheter insertion and tunneled HD catheter insertion, with and without fluoroscopic support.

Research Opportunities

  • Fellows are encouraged, supported, and mentored in developing their academic interests.
  • They are exposed to a wide range of research opportunities in areas of knowledge synthesis, translational and implementation science, clinical epidemiology, and health economics.

International Collaboration

  • Our faculty collaborate widely with national and international partners and institutions, affording many opportunities for additional training and travel.

Department of Internal Medicine

  • The Department of Internal Medicine is made up of 18 sections, serving over 1.5 million people.
