Program Overview
Introduction to the Master of Science in Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics
The Master of Science (Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics) program prepares students for a more specialized approach to agribusiness. Students will develop competence in solving real-world problems related to food production, from policy and risk management to international trade and resource management.
Program Details
The University of Manitoba MSc in Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics is a two-year program with thesis and comprehensive options available.
- Expected duration: 2 years
- Tuition and fees: Program fees are assessed in the first two terms of study, followed by a continuing fee in the third and any subsequent terms.
Coursework
Students in the Masters program can choose one of three streams:
- Agricultural Economics
- Agribusiness
- Environmental and Resource Economics All students will be automatically entered into the Agricultural Economics Stream and will require approval to move into the Agribusiness or Environmental and Resource Economics streams. Within each stream, there is a thesis and a comprehensive option.
Pre-master's
- Expected duration: 1 year
- Tuition and fees: The Pre-Master's program is composed of undergraduate courses, and students are charged per course fees. Students with undergraduate course deficiencies may be admitted to the Pre-master's program to complete the background requirements. Course requirements are set by the Graduate Associate Head to address an individual's academic deficiencies and gain eligibility to apply to the master's program.

Thesis Option
Students must complete 18 credit hours of coursework, with at least 9 credit hours at the 7000 level. Students in this option must submit an acceptable thesis and pass a thesis oral examination as well as present two graduate seminars open to the public.
Comprehensive Option
Students must complete 27 hours of coursework with at least 18 credit hours at the 7000 level. All students in this option must complete a research paper and pass a comprehensive examination based primarily on the paper.
Admission Requirements
The following are minimum requirements to be considered for entry into the Master of Science (Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics) program. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee acceptance into the program. To be considered for admission to the Master of Science (Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics) program, you must:
- Have a BSc in Agribusiness or a four-year bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Economics. In addition to the admission requirements described here, all applicants must meet the minimum admission and English language proficiency requirements of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies.
Application Deadlines
The Master of Science (Agribusiness and Agricultural Economics) program has two application deadlines per year. Applications must be completed online and include several parts.
