Program Overview


Program Overview

The Welcome Mentor program is designed for University of Manitoba (UM) students who have completed at least one full academic year. The program aims to provide support and guidance to new international students adjusting to life in Winnipeg and at UM.


Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Welcome Mentor program, students must:


  • Be enrolled at UM and have completed one full academic year
  • Be registered as a full-time student
  • Be in good academic standing with a GPA of 2.5 or higher
  • Have completed the interview, reference checks, and mandatory training for mentors

Program Benefits

Volunteering as a Welcome Mentor offers numerous benefits, including:


  • Enhancement of leadership, communication, and cross-cultural skills
  • Opportunity to help new international students adjust to life in Winnipeg and at UM

Time Commitment

The program for the Winter term begins in mid-December and runs until April. Mentors are expected to:


  • Meet virtually and communicate with their student before they arrive in Canada
  • Meet in-person with their student and complete a set of tasks by the end of the term

Mentor Responsibilities

A Welcome Mentor will:


  • Provide information and support for common adjustment tasks for their mentee
    ew student
  • Create a safe and open environment that encourages mentees to discuss their concerns and ask questions
  • Make appropriate referrals to their mentee for campus student services
  • Create a supportive environment to help their mentee transition to UM
  • Provide check-ins and feedback to the Program Coordinator about their progress and experience
    • New onboarded mentors must complete 1.5 hours of training
    • All mentors must attend at least one IC event and the Mentor/Mentee Meet & Greet

Mentor Recognition

Upon successful completion of the program, Welcome Mentors will be eligible to receive recognition on their Experience Record.
