Program Overview
Introduction to the Fellowship in Advanced Craniomaxillofacial Surgery (FACS)
Craniomaxillofacial surgery is a subspecialized area focusing on the treatment of skull, face, and jaw deformities. The complexity of these deformities often requires multi-disciplinary involvement of various medical and dental specialties to provide optimum rehabilitation. The Combined Craniofacial Clinic in University of Malaya Medical Centre (UMMC) is the only multi-disciplinary clinical and research centre in Malaysia providing comprehensive care to patients with craniofacial disorders.
Program Overview
The Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Malaya offers a clinical subspecialty program, which is a structured training platform for aspiring craniomaxillofacial surgeons. Fellows will receive comprehensive exposure and clinical training at the established academic craniomaxillofacial centre that focuses not just on clinical intervention, but also excels at fundamental and innovative craniofacial science research. The advanced craniomaxillofacial surgery fellowship is currently the only comprehensive subspecialty training platform in the country that offers clinical experience with all aspects of craniomaxillofacial surgery for adult and paediatric patients, combined with a comprehensive teaching curriculum.
Aims and Objectives
At the end of the fellowship program, candidates are expected to be able to provide comprehensive management of patients with craniomaxillofacial deformity, with a focus on:
- Patient's assessment and evaluation
- Pre-surgical work-up and planning, including surgical guides, simulation, and important functional assessment
- Surgical techniques and other alternatives
- Peri-operative medical co-management with other relevant specialties
- Post-surgical management
- Management of peri-operative complications
Training and Guidance
The training and guidance will be provided by leaders in the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery, including experts in surgical fields, medicine, dentistry, and fundamental medical science research. The Oro-Craniomaxillofacial Research and Surgical (OCReS) group at the Faculty of Dentistry Universiti Malaya is a dedicated craniofacial research entity established in 2016, focusing on the advancement of research and development in the field of craniomaxillofacial surgery. Clinical services for patients with craniofacial disorders are also provided at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Clinical Sciences, Faculty of Dentistry.
