Program Overview

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme at University of Malaya is a research and dissertation programme, where students will be allowed to choose the field of research and study. The candidates will carry out focused research in their area of specialisation, which is of immediate relevance to local interest. They will be alert to the challenges faced in the international arena through seminars, conferences, and other events.

Course Structure

The PhD degree is offered by research mode only, leading to the submission of a thesis. The candidate is required to register for a minimum period of 4 semesters (2 years) and the maximum duration is 12 semesters (6 years). Candidates can source out research projects under the supervision of one of the academic staff at the Department of Electrical Engineering. Candidates are required to take a Research Methodology course during the first year of studies.

General Entry Requirements

• A Master's degree with honors in a related field
• A Bachelor's degree with honors in a related engineering field or equivalent degree
• Meet other conditions set by the Senate
  • Applicants having a Bachelor's Degree with CGPA 3.7 and above can apply directly for the PhD programme

English Language Requirements

• Have at least IELTS Band 5.5 or TOEFL 550, if the degree is from a university where English is not the medium of instruction
