Program Overview
Master of Internal Medicine (MIntMed)
The Master of Internal Medicine has adopted a new curriculum, National Postgraduate Medicine Curriculum (NPMC), from December 2022. This curriculum is the result of a collaborative effort between the Jawatankuasa Kepakaran Bersama Perubatan Dalaman Institut Pengajian Tinggi Awam (JKBPD IPTA), Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), and the Ministry of Health Malaysia (MOH). It provides a structured and unified curriculum for the training of Internal Medicine specialists throughout the country, aligned with the national strategy for healthcare.
Requirement
To be eligible for the program, candidates must:
- Hold a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University or an equivalent medical qualification from a university approved by the Senate.
- Have a minimum of one year of clinical experience after graduation and obtained full registration with the Malaysian Medical Council.
- Qualify for registration as a medical practitioner under the Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) of Malaysia.
- Obtain a satisfactory result in the entry examination (MEDEX) or have obtained MRCP Part 1.
For non-Malaysian citizens, additional requirements include:
- A minimum score of 600 in the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- A minimum band score of 6.0 in the International English Testing System (IELTS).
Course Structure
The program of study comprises three stages:
- Stage I (First Year):
- Study of basic sciences relevant to the practice of internal medicine.
- Clinical clerkship under supervision with emphasis on emergency medicine/acute medicine.
- Stage II (Year 2 and 3):
- Rotational postings of three months duration each in the following seven disciplines of internal medicine:
- Cardiology
- Nephrology
- Neurology
- Respiratory Medicine
- Gastroenterology and Hepatology
- Haematology and Oncology
- Endocrinology
- One month each for Rheumatology, Infectious Diseases, and Dermatology.
- Conduct a research project.
- Stage III (Year 4):
- Choice of posting in an approved subspecialty or general medicine in the Faculty or a recognised centre outside the Faculty.
Rules
- No candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Stage II or Stage III unless they have obtained satisfactory results in their annual portfolio review.
- No candidate shall be permitted to proceed to Stage III unless they have passed the Internal Medicine Qualifying Assessment (IMQA).
