AEI-ASEM Summer School 2017

The AEI-ASEM Summer School 2017 was held from 24 July to 11 August 2017. The program brought together youth from the Asia-Europe region to Kuala Lumpur and Brussels. Thirty participants engaged in multiple courses, discussions, and workshops on topics such as multilateralism and multiculturalism in Asia and Europe.

Program Structure

The summer school was divided into two parts: the first part was held in Malaysia, and the second part was held in Brussels, Belgium. In Malaysia, the students resided at the International House, University of Malaya, and the teaching of modules was held at the Asia-Europe Institute. More than 10 modules were prepared to tackle different topics, including Malaysian history, contemporary human rights issues in Asia and Europe, multiculturalism in Malaysia, identity and politics, Malay music and dances, and the Peranakan in South-East Asia.

Excursions and Trips

Participants were taken on excursions and trips to the National Museum, the Malaysian Parliament, Putrajaya, and the State of Melaka. Some of these trips included discussions with the organizers, such as a visit to the Malaysian Parliament, where students engaged with Dato' Azalina Othman.

Brussels Experience

The Brussels experience followed a similar schedule, with modules held in the mornings and excursions and trips conducted after lunch. Topics included trade multilateralism, security cooperation, EU institutionalization, regional cooperation, and ASEAN human rights. The organizers, University of Maastricht, organized trips around Brussels, including the Atomium, House of European History, European Union Parliamentarium, the United Nations University, and the city of Bruges.

Certificate Presentation Ceremony

The program concluded with a certificate presentation ceremony, and the summer school ended on 11 August 2017. The overall experience showed the value of interconnectivity, and the AEI-ASEM Summer School 2017 provided a platform for continuous engagement and discussion among youth from the Asia-Europe region.
