Program Overview


Master of Epidemiology Program

The Master of Epidemiology program is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in epidemiological, analytical, and critical appraisal skills. The program aims to develop students' understanding of the epidemiological and biostatistical theories and methods that underpin clinical medical research, public health practice, and healthcare evaluation.


Program Overview

The 1-year full-time Master of Epidemiology program consists of a minimum of 42 credits, offered in two concentrations: Clinical Epidemiology and Public Health Epidemiology. The program is designed for applicants with a background in epidemiology, quantitative research, or health.


Graduates' Expectations

Graduates of the Master of Epidemiology program are expected to:


  1. Understand the epidemiological and biostatistical theory and methods that underpin epidemiological practice and research.
  2. Build competence in epidemiological, analytical, and critical appraisal, and develop core skills for research and practice in epidemiology.
  3. Understand and investigate the causes and spread of disease and develop the means for prevention or control.

Language Requirement

A non-Malaysian applicant whose degree is from a university or institution of higher learning where the medium of instruction for that degree is not in the English language shall be required to:


  1. Obtain a score of 600 for a paper-based total (PBT); a score of 250 for a computer-based total (CBT) or a score of 100 for an Internet-based total (IBT) for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); or
  2. Obtain a band of 6 for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) (Academic).

Entry Requirement

The entry requirements for the Master of Epidemiology program are:


  1. The degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery or Bachelor of Dental Surgery or an equivalent medical qualification; or
  2. A Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Allied Health or its equivalent with a CGPA of at least 3.00; or
  3. A Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Allied Health or its equivalent with a CGPA of 2.70 up to 2.99; and if at least one (1) of the following criteria is fulfilled:
  • A graduate from the University of Malaya; or
  • Having at least one (1) year of working experience in a related field; or
  • Having publications in a related field; or
  • Is a recipient of a scholarship; or
  • Is a government servant; or
  • Passed the interview by the faculty; or
  • Passed the entrance assessment by the faculty
  1. A Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Allied Health or its equivalent with a CGPA of 2.50 up to 2.69; and if at least one (1) (for UM graduates) or two (2) (for non-UM graduates) of the following criteria is/are fulfilled:
  • Having at least one (1) year working experience in a related field; or
  • Having publications in a related field; or
  • Is a recipient of a scholarship; or
  • Is a government servant; or
  • Passed the interview by the faculty; or
  • Passed the entrance assessment by the faculty
  1. A Bachelor's degree in Public Health or Allied Health or its equivalent with a CGPA of 2.00 up to 2.49; and if at least one (1) (for UM graduates) or two (2) (for not UM graduates) of the following criteria is/are fulfilled:
  • Having at least five (5) years working experience in a related field; or
  • Having at least one (1) publication in a high-impact journal within a related field; or
  • Is a recipient of a scholarship; or
  • Is a government servant; or
  • Passed the entrance assessment by the Faculty (mandatory for not UM graduates); or
  • Other qualifications approved by the Senate from time to time; and
  • Passed the entrance assessment recognized by the Faculty

Intake Schedule

The Master of Epidemiology program has one intake per year, during the 1st Semester (September).


Fees

The fees for the Master of Epidemiology program are:


  • RM 41,000.00 (Local student)
  • RM 63,000.00 (International student) Note: Fees are subject to amendment by the Management of Universiti Malaya.
