Bamboo Shoots: Early Cancer Diagnosis
Program Overview
Program Overview
The REBUNG program is focused on early cancer diagnosis, with a specific emphasis on addressing the challenges faced by B40 communities in Selangor. The program is led by Prof. Dr Nur Aishah Mohd Taib from the Faculty of Medicine.
Community Problem
The program aims to tackle the significant challenge of late diagnosis in Selangor's B40 communities, which is attributed to poor health literacy among community members and primary healthcare providers. The fragmented health system and lack of integrated implementation platforms for effective cancer control across Malaysia further compound the issue.
Program Objectives
The program has several key objectives:
- Community Literacy: Increase cancer health literacy among B40 community members in Selangor to promote early self-referral.
- Healthcare Training: Enhance literacy and skills of healthcare providers (doctors and nurses) within the early diagnosis ecosystem.
- Navigation Support: Train community leaders and NGOs to provide superior navigation and psychosocial support for cancer patients.
- Empowering Communities: Drive change through education and integrated care pathways.
Key Focus Areas
The program focuses on addressing the integrated gaps in the current system, including:
- Lack of multidisciplinary integrated implementation platforms for effective cancer control across Malaysia.
- Fragmented health system barriers that limit timely access to education, screening, and navigation, delaying detection and worsening outcomes.
Leadership
The program is led by Prof. Dr Nur Aishah Mohd Taib, indicating a strong academic and medical foundation for the initiative.
