Program Overview
Introduction to the Program
The University of Roma Tor Vergata offers a Bachelor's degree in Internet Engineering, focusing on the design, development, implementation, and management of secure systems for communication and information processing. This program falls under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector, which plays a fundamental and strategic role in modern society, enabling technological progress in various areas such as health, environment, energy, transportation, commerce, public services, entertainment, national security, education, and research.
Program Description
The Bachelor's degree in Internet Engineering is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of ICT, including computer networks, software development, telecommunications, and cybersecurity. Upon completion of the program, graduates can pursue various career paths, including network engineers, software developers, system analysts, telecommunications specialists, cybersecurity analysts, and ICT project managers. They can find employment in telecommunications companies, software development firms, IT consulting companies, research organizations, and government agencies.
Curriculum
The program covers a wide range of topics, including:
- Computer networks: design, implementation, and maintenance of local (LAN), geographical (WAN), and wireless networks, as well as network protocols, security, routing, and switching.
- Software development: basic programming languages for web services and ICT infrastructure management, software design, coding, testing, debugging, software project management, and quality assurance.
- Telecommunications: communication systems for voice, video, and data transmission, including telecommunications networks, mobile, satellite, optical, and signal processing.
- Internet of Things (IoT): IoT technologies, such as sensor networks, data analysis, and application development.
- Cybersecurity: cryptography techniques, network security protocols, vulnerability assessment, and defense against hacking techniques.
Specializations
After passing the basic engineering exams, students can choose from the following specializations to personalize their study plan according to their interests:
Cybersecurity
Specialize in network and system attack and defense.
Internet of Things
Specialize in IoT systems.
Communication Technologies
Specialize in communication technologies.
Educational Path
The program is structured as follows:
- First year: The educational offer is oriented towards basic engineering subjects and an initial introduction to fundamental ICT aspects.
- Second year: Completes the preparation on basic engineering subjects and focuses mostly on fundamental subjects of information and communication technologies.
- Third year: Many exams are chosen by the student and focus on a subset of specialist aspects that are spendable on the job, including IoT systems, configuration and management of secure network systems, back-end and front-end programming for internet applications, operating systems and databases, radio localization technologies (Radar, RFID), communication, and Earth observation.
Balance between Theory and Practice
The degree course is in Italian, and many courses include practical laboratory aspects as an integral part.
Career Opportunities
The degree provides transversal skills that are spendable in telecommunications companies, software development firms, IT consulting companies, research organizations, and government agencies, as well as startups. Graduates can work as network engineers, software developers, system analysts, telecommunications specialists, cybersecurity analysts, and ICT project managers.
Master's Degree in ICT and Internet Engineering
The Master's degree teachings are all in English (with mostly Italian professors), providing graduates with a professional training that is immediately spendable even at an international level. Additionally, the widespread presence of students from both EU and non-EU countries represents a useful experience of multi-cultural study and socialization.
