European Master of Science in Law and Economics
Program Overview
Introduction to the European Master of Science in Law and Economics (EMLE)
The European Master of Science in Law and Economics (EMLE) is a one-year international and interdisciplinary master's program. It is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the interdisciplinary field of law and economics.
Objectives and Activities
The program aims to offer an excellent teaching of law and economics at the master's level. It is a joint degree program that combines the expertise of nine partner universities from around the world. The program is divided into three academic trimesters, with possible mobilities between the partner universities. On average, 80 students are accepted into the program each year.
Specializations
The program offers three specializations:
- Innovation and Intellectual Property
- Public and International Law (including EU Law)
- Market, Competition, and Regulation
Teaching and Supervision
The courses and master's thesis supervision are provided by international academics of high standing, ensuring a close link between teaching and university research. The maximum capacity of the EMLE program is set at 105 students to limit class sizes to a maximum of 35 students per specialization.
Innovative Aspect
The program's innovative aspect lies in its interdisciplinary approach to law and economics. It enables jurists and economists to better understand the incentives provided by legal rules and to formulate policy recommendations on alternative legal arrangements to achieve a given social goal.
Significant Achievement
One of the program's significant achievements is that all graduating students receive a joint degree, and depending on their location, they may also receive one or two additional degrees. All graduates are accompanied by a supplement to the joint degree.
Career Prospects
EMLE graduates work in various professions where law and economics are relevant, ranging from the academic world to policy decision-makers (government agencies), the private sector (consulting firms, law firms, and international companies), and international organizations such as the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the World Bank, the OECD, UNCTAD, the German Bundeskartellamt, and the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority.
