Program Overview
The DEUST Formation de base aux métiers du théâtre is a university program designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in the theater arts. The program aims to equip students with the theoretical, practical, and professional skills necessary to succeed in the theater industry.
Objectives
The program's objectives are threefold:
- Theories: Master the primary theories in aesthetics, theater studies, and humanities, as well as develop writing skills.
- Practices: Exercise the fundamentals of acting, directing, scenography, stage management, mediation, training, and playwriting.
- Professionalization: Specialize in a theater profession through a specific track (targeted workshop, internship, and tutoring).
Target Audience
The program is intended for students and professionals seeking to acquire or consolidate cross-disciplinary skills in theater theories and practices, linked to the construction of a professional project.
Admission Requirements
Admission is through Parcoursup. Prerequisites include:
- A good academic level
- Theoretical and practical experiences in theater
- Motivation
- Analytical skills in live performance
Recommended prerequisites include:
- Associative commitment
- Other experiences in artistic practices
Program Structure
The academic year is divided into two semesters, each consisting of twelve weeks of teaching. Each semester is composed of blocks of knowledge and skills, which group teaching units.
The program is structured around three pillars: theory (numerous courses), practice (practical workshops, theatrical creations directed by invited directors and performed in professional conditions), and professionalization (seminars articulated with professional tracks).
Teaching Sites
The program is taught at the ALLSH site in Aix-en-Provence (Schuman).
Research and Further Studies
The DEUST can be followed by a L3 course in Arts of the Scene within the License Arts of the Spectacle.
Knowledge and Skills
The program aims to provide students with:
- Theoretical approaches to the central dimensions of theater practice
- Practical investment in the constitution of the artistic gesture
- Processual construction of a professional project
Students will acquire skills such as:
- Mastering writing and oral practices
- Using major references in art history and theater
- Handling theoretical tools in aesthetics, theater studies, and humanities
- Dominating a specific theater practice
- Knowing the professional field of theater jobs and how to navigate it
- Constructing an artistic project and finalizing it
- Mastering a living language
Stages and Supervised Projects
Each student enrolls in a track corresponding to a theater profession. The tracks are not intended for adaptation to a job position but rather as a pedagogical space for confrontation with one of the envisioned professions.
The tracks include:
- Dramaturgy and directing
- Stage management
- Scenography
- Mediation/production/administration
- Training and playwriting
Each track includes a specific seminar, practical workshop, personal professional project, and a minimum 100-hour internship.
Professional Integration
The program aims for professional integration, with numerous partnerships with theater companies and cultural institutions.
Career Opportunities
Graduates can engage in professional insertion as actors, playwrights, assistant directors, directors, stage managers, scenographers, workshop animators, and professors of dramatic arts. They can work in theaters, companies, associations, schools, cultural centers, and French institutes abroad.
Further Studies
The DEUST can be followed by a L3 course in Arts of the Scene within the License Arts of the Spectacle at AMU or other universities.
