Introduction to the Diplôme Universitaire de Musicien Intervenant (DUMI)

The Diplôme Universitaire de Musicien Intervenant (DUMI) is a professional university degree that allows access to the Territorial Public Service (Employment Framework: Specialized Teaching Assistant). This degree is recognized by the Ministry of National Education and enables holders to intervene musically in kindergarten and elementary school with the simple approval of the director.

Objectives of the DUMI Formation

The DUMI formation aims to prepare musicians to:

  • Work in a school setting, collaborating with teachers
  • Develop an inventive pedagogy, open to different musical styles and creation
  • Create links between school, specialized teaching establishments, and various artistic venues in the territory
  • Coordinate a team in specific musical projects
  • Be an actor in cultural development to facilitate encounters between different audiences

Characteristics of the Formation

The formation is open to all forms of musical expression and combines experimentation and information, creation and reflection, theoretical contributions, and practical applications. Upon completion, the musician is capable of working in various domains to offer equal access to musical practice for the greatest number, in places managed by the territorial community or associations.

Structure of the Formation

The promotions are limited to 20 students, allowing for personalized follow-up by the pedagogical team. The formation is divided into two years, with the first year focusing on theoretical and practical contributions concerning the fields of competence of the musician, and the second year allowing for an in-depth reflection and practice of the musician's profession.

Certification

The DUMI certification can be obtained through initial training or through the Validation of Acquired Experience (VAE). Admission to the CFMI is subject to entrance tests.

Certification through Initial Training

  • Obtaining the DUMI is subject to the validation of the two years of training.
  • The professional character of the diploma requires specific validation modalities, excluding the principle of compensation between teaching units and automatic authorization of registration in the 2nd year for a student who has validated 75% of the 1st-year teaching credits.
  • Advanced students in certain domains may be exempt from courses but must still present themselves for partial and terminal controls to obtain the teaching units.

Validation of the First Year

If all the compulsory teaching units of the 1st year are acquired, the 1st year is validated. The council of trainers, meeting in a jury, may decide to allow registration in the 2nd year for a student who has not validated all the teaching units of the first year.

Validation of the Second Year

If all the compulsory teaching units of the 1st and 2nd years are acquired, the 2nd year is validated. The organization of teachings excludes the possibility of a second exam session for certain teaching units.

Admission and Duration of Studies

  • The maximum duration of studies for obtaining the DUMI is three years.
  • An additional registration may be authorized after examination of the file by the council of trainers, without the total number of annual registrations exceeding four.

Teaching Staff

The teaching staff includes:

  • School teachers
  • Pedagogical advisors in music education
  • Secondary school teachers
  • University teachers and INSPE teachers
  • Teachers in music schools and conservatories
  • Artists and professionals from various sectors, including health, disability, and cultural institutions.
