Master's degree in Public Law - Course: Legal theory
Program Overview
Master Droit Public: Théorie du Droit
The Master's program in Public Law: Theory of Law is designed for students who wish to complement their studies with a reflection on legal methods, a critique of legal discourse, and acquire a keen awareness of the social or moral issues underlying legal matters.
Objectives
The primary objective of the Theory of Law is to aim for intellectual and human progress of students and contribute to their future success in various fields. Upon completion of the program, students will have acquired a legal culture that confers a surplus of ease and mastery in legal analysis. They will be able to better distinguish figures of argumentation in law, compare legal cultures, decipher legal discourses, and use instruments and concepts that allow them to qualify the phenomenon of law.
Prerequisites
- The access to this program will be beneficial only to candidates who can demonstrate their interest and motivation for the theory and philosophy of law.
- Their academic background must verify their ability to master their knowledge, at least in the subjects where they have chosen to invest, and if possible, in courses that prepare for the training in the theory of law.
Recommended Prerequisites
It is recommended that students choose from the teachings that are open in Master 1, the courses of Argumentation and Legal Reasoning, History of Legal Thought, and Contract Law in the English Legal Tradition, which will prepare them for entry into the Theory of Law program.

Formation and Research
The training has a very close link with research and leads to associating students with the life of the host research unit, its colloquia and research seminars, conferences of invited professors, and research programs being carried out. Students have access to the library of the Laboratory of Theory of Law and can work there in contact with doctoral students.
Registration Regimes
This program is accessible in:
- Initial Training (FI)
- Continuing Education (FC)
- Distance Education (FAD) In the first year only.
Skills to Acquire
Beyond pursuing in-depth training in the major disciplines of law, it is a matter of enabling students, in close contact with ongoing research and in close contact with the life of a research unit, to master legal research methods, more precisely to enable students to:
- Master in-depth and critical reading of doctrinal texts
- Acquire autonomy in personal research work while understanding the collective dimension of research and learning, through a sense of being and learning deontology, to fit into it
- Master oral and written communication techniques
Internships and Supervised Projects
A four-month internship with a report on the research done during or on the occasion of the internship can be chosen. A supervised project, built within the framework of a UE, allows, in particular around invited professors, to follow and test new concepts and empirical research fields that emerge in the globalization of law.
Specific Pedagogical Modalities
The program is organized around six course units, including one unit for a supervised project and another dedicated to applied methodology. The training prioritizes important personal reading work, the writing of a research thesis, and the learning of methods.
