Habilitation ŕ Diriger des Recherches (HDR)
The Habilitation ŕ Diriger des Recherches (HDR) is a national diploma of higher education that allows holders to supervise research and direct doctoral theses. This diploma is the highest qualification that a university can award and is recognized as the most advanced level of French diplomas.
Requirements for HDR
To be eligible for the HDR, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Present a completed application form with a motivated opinion from their tutor
- Submit a manuscript (80% complete) that includes a synthesis of their scientific activities and projects, demonstrating their experience in research animation
- Provide a list of publications
- Submit their CV
- Include a copy of their thesis defense report
- Present a substantial body of original work related to their thesis (published or forthcoming books or articles)
Regulation
The HDR is regulated by the decree of November 23, 1988 (modified in 1992, 1995, and 2002). This diploma allows holders to apply for positions as university professors (after registration on the list of qualifications by the National Council of Universities), to be thesis directors, or to be chosen as thesis reviewers. It is also strongly recommended for applying to research director positions in Public Scientific and Technological Establishments.
