Program Overview


Mining Education Program

The Mining Education Program at Utah State University Eastern provides non-credit training for current and potential miners. The program aims to contribute to preventing accidents and saving lives by offering training and improving programs in various areas of mining education.


Program Overview

The program is located at the Western Instruction Building (WIB) Classroom #132, 500 North 100 East, Price, Utah 84501. All classes start at 8:00 am sharp, and cell phones are not allowed in new miner classes.

Course Details

Underground New Miner + Surface New Miner

  • Duration: 36 hours
  • Sessions: January 12-16, 2026, and February 9-13, 2026
  • Cost: $250
  • Description: Designed to train inexperienced, potential miners in areas such as mining methods, mine gases and detecting instruments, mine ventilation, first aid and safety transportation systems, electricity, fires mine explosions, and mine equipment.

Surface New Miner

  • Duration: 24 hours
  • Sessions: January 27, 2026, and February 24-26, 2026
  • Cost: $150
  • Description: Orientation training class for potential surface new miners, covering areas such as miner's rights, health and safety, first aid, transportation, fires and explosions, and mining methods.

Underground New Miner

  • Duration: 32 hours
  • Sessions: January 12-15, 2026, and February 9-12, 2026
  • Cost: $200
  • Description: Course designed to train inexperienced, potential miners in areas such as mining methods, mine gases and detecting instruments, mine ventilation, first aid and safety transportation systems, electricity, fires mine explosions, and mine equipment.

Annual Refresher

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Sessions: January 8, 2026, and February 5, 2026
  • Cost: $80
  • Description: Annual course for active miners covering areas in mine safety training, including accident prevention, first aid, roof and rib control, ventilation, rules and regulations, and electrical hazards.

Train the Trainer

  • Duration: 24 hours
  • Sessions: March 17-18, 2026
  • Cost: $300
  • Description: Students will study teaching techniques and lesson plan development, covering types and sources of MSHA teaching materials and MSHA required forms.

Initial Electrical

  • Duration: 90 hours
  • Sessions: January 9-10, 16-17, 23-24, 30-31, February 6-7, 2026
  • Cost: $290
  • Description: Course preparing students for the Utah State Mine Electrician Certification test, covering both state and federal topics for electrical certification testing.

Electrical Recertification

  • Duration: 8 hours
  • Sessions: No dates currently scheduled
  • Cost: $100
  • Description: Course approved by MSHA, designed for MSHA qualified electricians to meet the requirements of Part 75.153 (g) of Title 30, Code of Federal Regulations, for recertification.
