Program Overview

USU's Orff Teacher Training Course

The Orff Schulwerk Teacher Education Course is a two-week intensive program in music and movement education, led by music educator Leslie Timmons. This nationally recognized course introduces teachers to the Orff approach, a child-centered way of teaching music that emphasizes creativity, movement, and collaboration.

Course Description

The Orff approach meets students where they are, inviting joyful participation through singing, body percussion, improvisation, and ensemble play. It is rooted in the post-World War II work of German composer Carl Orff and colleague Gunild Keetman, who developed the approach as part of educational radio programs for children.

Course Objectives

  • Emphasize creativity, movement, and collaboration in music education
  • Introduce teachers to the Orff approach and its applications in the classroom
  • Provide participants with the skills and knowledge necessary to implement the Orff approach in their teaching practices

Course Structure

The course is part of a three-level national training structure, with completion of all three levels certifying teachers in the Orff Schulwerk approach. The program is led by experienced instructors, including Leslie Timmons, who brings decades of experience and expertise in the recorder.

Benefits of the Program

  • Affordability: The course is more affordable than similar programs offered in other cities, making it an attractive option for teachers from across the country and even internationally.
  • Access to professional-quality instruments and facilities: Participants have access to high-quality instruments and facilities, enhancing their learning experience.
  • Long-standing support from the university: The program has been offered nearly every year since 1988, demonstrating the university's commitment to music education and the Orff approach.

Impact of the Program

The training's impact extends well beyond the university walls, with alumni bringing the Orff approach to classrooms throughout Utah and transforming how music is taught and perceived. Research has shown that music participation improves school culture, supports all kinds of learners, and develops lifelong skills like collaboration, discipline, and creativity.
