Introduction to the Freiwilliges Wissenschaftliches Jahr (FWJ) Program

The Freiwilliges Wissenschaftliches Jahr (FWJ) is a voluntary scientific year program designed for high school graduates to explore their interests in science and research. This program offers participants the opportunity to gain insight into the world of science and research at the Ruhr-Universit‰t Bochum (RUB).


Program Details

Program Structure

The FWJ program is a full-time commitment that lasts for one year, starting on October 1st. Participants will work approximately 40 hours a week, divided into:


  • 12 hours of work in the faculty
  • Time for attending lectures and workshops
  • Time for preparing and following up on lectures and workshops

Participation Requirements

To participate in the FWJ program, applicants must:


  • Have a strong interest in technical and scientific subjects
  • Be curious and enthusiastic about research
  • Have basic technical understanding and IT skills (although not necessarily required)

Application and Selection Process

The application process for the FWJ program typically starts in March of each year, with a limited number of spots available. The selection process is competitive, and applicants are chosen based on their interest, motivation, and potential.
