Program Overview


Introduction to the MA ECUE Program

The MA degree program in European Culture and Economy (MA ECUE) is a comprehensive program that covers European, social, cultural, economical, and political developments, structures, and processes. The program provides students with the opportunity to conduct in-depth analyses and studies of these topics through a multiperspective and interdisciplinary linkage of knowledge from involved subjects, including Cultural Studies, Economics, Ethics, History, Political Science, and Sociology.


Curriculum

The MA ECUE program includes a structured fundamental training in the first and second semesters, methodological training in the first and second semesters, flexibility and individualization of studies through elective in-depth modules in the third semester, an optional practice module (internship) in the compulsory course section, in-depth methodological training, and practice-related use of study contents at the field trip to Brussels.


Program Structure

The program consists of the following modules and courses:


  • Introductory Module: part 1: Introductory Colloquium; part 2: Intercultural Competence in Theory and Practice (3 credit points, 1st semester)
  • Basic Module Philosophy and Law: lecture: European Law; seminar: Economic Ethics (10 credit points, 1st and 2nd semesters)
  • Basic Module History: lecture and seminar on topics of European History (10 credit points, 1st semester)
  • Basic Module Language and Culture: course: EU English; seminar/lecture series: Concepts of Europe - Historical and Cultural Perspectives (10 credit points, 1st and 2nd semesters)
  • Basic Module Economy: lecture: Introduction to Micro and Macroeconomics; seminar: Principles of Economic Policy and European Integration (10 credit points, 1st and 2nd semesters)
  • Basic Module Policy and Society: lecture: Political System of the EU; seminar: Societies and Cultures in Europe from a Sociological Perspective (10 credit points, 1st and 2nd semesters)
  • Research Methods 1: lecture: Sociological Statistics + exercises; lecture on multivariate statistical methods or setting up focus on theories or qualitative methods (12 credit points, 1st and 2nd semesters)
  • In-depth Module 1: two seminars/or 1 module of choice in one of the MA ECUE subjects (10 credit points, 3rd and 4th semesters)
  • In-depth Module 2: two seminars/or 1 module of choice in one of the MA ECUE subjects, different from In-depth Module 1 (10 credit points, 3rd and 4th semesters)
  • OR: In-depth Module 1 + Practice Module: two seminars/or 1 module of choice in one of the MA ECUE subjects + at least 6 weeks long internship (full-time) (20 credit points, 3rd and 4th semesters)
  • Research Methods 2: seminar: Research Design in EU Studies; field trip: 4-day field trip to Brussels; interdisciplinary final colloquium (15 credit points, 3rd and 4th semesters)
  • MA Final Module: Interdisciplinary MA thesis (4 or 6 month working time) (20 credit points, 4th semester)

  • Faculty of Philology (possible specialization in comparative literature studies, cultural studies, English studies, media studies)
  • Faculty of Management and Economics (possible specialization in economics)
  • Faculty of Social Science (possible specialization in political science, sociology, social policy, and social economics)

Language of Instruction

The program offers classes taught in both German and English, with a minimum of 65% and a maximum of 88% of the classes taught in English.
