Apprenticeship Chemical Laboratory Technician
The university offers an apprenticeship program for chemical laboratory technicians, which includes:
- Training period: 3.5 years (can be shortened to 3 years with good to very good performance)
- Start of training: September 1st
- Language of instruction: German
- Requirements:
- Good grades in chemistry, mathematics, biology, and English
- Keen interest in scientific work in a laboratory
- Good dexterity, technical understanding, and ability to work responsibly both in a team and independently
General Areas of Responsibility
As a chemical laboratory technician, the main tasks include:
- Planning, carrying out, and optimizing experimental procedures
- Preparative chemistry: carrying out inorganic and organic syntheses
- Analytical chemistry: analyzing samples both qualitatively and quantitatively using modern computer-aided measuring devices
- Analyzing and documenting test and measurement results
- Separating mixtures of substances and purifying synthesis products
- Working with hazardous substances
- Implementing quality assurance, occupational, environmental, and health protection measures
- Environmentally friendly disposal of hazardous substances

Vocational School
Theoretical training takes place at the Stadtmitte vocational college in Mülheim an der Ruhr, where students are prepared for their future careers in subjects such as laboratory technology, economics, and business studies.
After the Apprenticeship
After completing the final examination part 1, students have the opportunity to actively participate in current research work in various working groups at the Faculty of Chemistry and Biochemistry, where they can learn elective skills such as:
