Introduction to the Freiwilliges Wissenschaftliches Jahr (FWJ) Program

The Freiwilliges Wissenschaftliches Jahr (FWJ) is a voluntary research year program designed for high school graduates to explore their interests in science and research before deciding on a course of study. This program offers participants the opportunity to work with a research group, attend lectures, and participate in workshops to gain insight into various fields of study.

Program Details

Duration and Start Date

The FWJ program begins on October 1st and lasts for one year. The application period for the program starting in October 2026 will begin in March 2026.

Participation Requirements

To participate in the FWJ program, applicants must submit an application. The selection process is competitive, and each research group has a limited number of spots available. Applicants should have a strong interest in technical and scientific topics, as well as curiosity and a desire to conduct research. While not mandatory, having basic technical understanding and IT skills can be beneficial for some research groups.

Program Structure

Participants in the FWJ program will:

• Work on ongoing research projects in their assigned research group (approximately 12 hours per week).
• Attend lectures and courses from the university's curriculum, with the option to take initial exams if desired.
• Participate in the central semester program for study and career orientation, including mandatory workshops.

Compensation

Selected participants will receive a monthly stipend of 400 Euros.

Time Commitment

The FWJ program is a full-time commitment, requiring approximately 40 hours per week.
