Why Choose the Geosciences Program?

Geologists work in the field, laboratory, and with computers to explore the Earth. They contribute to the protection of our planet by studying processes within it and on its surface, helping society to obtain energy resources sustainably and protecting it from natural disasters. They locate natural resources such as water, minerals, construction materials, and energy sources. They advise on major infrastructure projects. As a geoscientist, one can have a significant impact on the world.

Career Opportunities for Geoscientists

Geologists find career opportunities in many different areas, including:

  • Environmental remediation and technology
  • Mining and hydrocarbon exploration and production
  • Sustainable energy policy
  • Assessment of natural hazards
  • Land use planning
  • Planetary sciences
  • Education (schools and universities)

Employers are also diverse, with successful geology graduates working for geotechnical firms, multinational companies, government agencies, universities, research institutes, and more.

What to Bring to the Study of Geosciences

To study geosciences, one should be prepared to:

  • Study a technical subject
  • Work on scientific problems with possibly fragmented information
  • Build camaraderie and collaboration with peers and colleagues

Geoscientists use chemistry, physics, and biology to explore the Earth, often combining their knowledge of geology with mathematics, chemistry, physics, and biology to understand the Earth as a system.

Why Study Geosciences at Ruhr-Universität Bochum?

The Institute for Geology, Mineralogy, and Geophysics at RUB is an ideal place to study geosciences, offering a broad spectrum of disciplines within one institute, which is rare in German universities. An international faculty and a binational study program (at the MSc level) provide students with many opportunities to gain international experience. The broad range of subjects allows students to prepare for a variety of careers in geosciences by building their expertise in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and international environment, giving them a competitive edge in the job market.

Fieldwork in the Geosciences Program

Fieldwork is an integral part of the BSc and MSc education at the GMG, ranging from local and regional excursions in remote areas that teach basic mapping skills to advanced courses in structural mapping. It also includes more technical courses that require sampling and specialized equipment, covering all aspects of the geology program, including petrology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, and geophysical fieldwork in Germany, other parts of Europe, and distant locations like Argentina.
