Bachelor of Maritime Engineering (Specialisation) (Honours)
Program Overview
Introduction to the Bachelor of Maritime Engineering
The Bachelor of Maritime Engineering (Specialisation) (Honours) is a 4-year full-time or up to 9-year part-time program offered at the Australian Maritime College (AMC) in Launceston. The AMC is ranked #1 in the International Association of Maritime Universities, providing students with the opportunity to work closely with the Australian maritime and shipbuilding industries.
Program Overview
This world-class degree in maritime engineering allows students to design complex marine machinery alongside leading engineers in the southern hemisphere's most advanced facilities. The program focuses on two specialisations: Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering.
Specialisations
- Naval Architecture: This specialisation focuses on the design and construction of everything from submarines and naval ships to luxury yachts, ferries, and cargo vessels. Students can gain expertise in the shipping, high-speed, offshore, defence, underwater, and recreational industries.
- Areas of focus include:
- Shipping
- High-speed
- Offshore
- Defence
- Underwater
- Recreational industries
- Areas of focus include:
- Ocean Engineering: This specialisation dives into advanced studies of the ocean environment and the conditions that impact the life cycle of marine structures. It focuses on the design, construction, and operation of offshore, subsea, and coastal structures, including applied wave mechanics, underwater technology, and offshore renewable energy concepts.
Study Options
The program offers a 2+2 structure, where students can complete the first two years of their degree at partnering institutions in Australia and New Zealand, and the final two years on campus at AMC in Launceston, Tasmania. Partnering institutions include:
- Auckland University of Technology
- Edith Cowan University
- Flinders University
Further Study Options
Postgraduate Maritime Engineering has been paused for 2026. However, the AMC offers other postgraduate programs, including Global Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and Maritime Management.
Research Areas
The program provides access to the Southern Hemisphere's best maritime research and learning facilities, allowing students to engage in advanced research and learning in maritime engineering, including naval architecture and ocean engineering.
