Program Overview

Introduction to the Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science

The Bachelor of Marine and Antarctic Science is a comprehensive degree that offers students the opportunity to study alongside the world's best researchers in the field. This three-year full-time or up to seven-year part-time program is based in Hobart, providing unparalleled access to the thriving aquaculture industry and the unique marine environment of Tasmania.

Program Overview

The degree gives students the skills and knowledge for a career in the exciting, growing, and globally critical marine, fisheries, aquaculture, and Antarctic sectors. Students will study a series of core units that ensure an extensive understanding of the marine environment, including marine resource management, marine and Antarctic ecosystems, and how ocean currents influence the global climate system. Additionally, students will develop essential skills in mapping and learn how to use data to develop and test ideas and draw conclusions.

Majors

Students will choose from one of five exciting majors, each enabling them to focus on a specific marine and Antarctic science area built around our deep understanding of the environment and our world-leading research strengths. The majors include:

  • Marine and Antarctic Governance
  • Marine Biology
  • Marine Resource Management
  • Oceans, Ice and Climate
  • Sustainable Aquaculture

Marine and Antarctic Governance

The Marine and Antarctic Governance major prepares students to understand the science, policy, and laws that protect and govern our oceans and Antarctica. This unique program offers unparalleled access to the work of influential organisations, providing both physical and organisational proximity that enhances the learning experience. By taking a multidisciplinary approach, students will learn to effectively communicate with government bodies, international organisations, and civil society groups to shape and influence policy making. Careers in Marine and Antarctic Governance include:

  • Marine Governance Consultant
  • Environmental Management
  • Project Manager
  • Communications Manager

Careers in Marine Biology include:

  • Threatened Species Biologist
  • Marine Park Manager
  • Conservation Biologist
  • Antarctic Scientist

Marine Resource Management

The Marine Resource Management major focuses on sustainable fisheries, which are critical for global protein demand and support community-based activities. Students will work closely with local industry and global experts in fisheries science, gaining the qualifications necessary to make a meaningful impact in this critical field. Careers in Marine Resource Management include:

  • Marine/Fisheries Research Scientist
  • Fisheries Observer
  • Environmental Consultant
  • Environmental/Fisheries Technician
  • Compliance Officer

Oceans, Ice and Climate

The Oceans, Ice and Climate major explores Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, providing students with the opportunity to become specialists in ocean dynamics, Earth's changing climate, sea level rise, and the carbon cycle. Students will gain insight into the inner workings of the CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division, as well as IMAS. Careers in Oceans, Ice and Climate include:

  • Advisor or consultant for climate risk
  • Climate change adaptation
  • Climate repair and carbon management
  • Data analyst
  • Antarctic researcher

Sustainable Aquaculture

The Sustainable Aquaculture major produces seafood and marine products to meet global demand for protein and nutraceuticals. Students will learn how to produce various aquatic species alongside industry partners in the fastest-growing sustainable food sector globally. Careers in Sustainable Aquaculture include:

  • Aquarium and Conservation Aquaculture
  • Environmental Monitoring and Biosecurity
  • Commercial Aquaculture
