Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Music is a comprehensive program that provides students with a hands-on education in music, filled with adventure and creativity. The program is designed to help students develop their individual skills in a specialisation of their choice, with a focus on music practice, performance, and creation.

Overview

The Bachelor of Music is a three-year full-time or seven-year part-time program that is available to study as both part-time or full-time. The program is offered at the Hobart campus, with classes commencing in Semester 1. Students can choose from a range of specialisations, including Classical Performance, Classical Composition, Film Scoring and Music for Media, Jazz and Popular Music Performance, Music Technology, and Songwriting.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the Bachelor of Music, domestic students must meet the University's General Entry Requirements based on their prior studies and experience. They must also successfully complete an audition and interview, either in person on-campus in Hobart or by submitting a private internet link, USB, CD, or DVD of their audition repertoire. International students must meet the minimum English Language Requirements, University General Entry Requirements, and any course-specific requirements.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Music requires the completion of 300 credit points, comprising 100 credit points of core units, a 100 credit point major in Music Practice, and 100 credit points of elective units. The core units include Music and Place, Music and Spectacle, Tools and Techniques 1 and 2, and Arranging and Music Creation. The Music Practice major includes units such as Music Practice 1-6, Music Capstone Project, and Experimental Production.

The Bachelor of Music provides students with the tools to create their own future confidently, immersed in creativity and innovation. Graduates can pursue careers in music performance, composition, education, and production, as well as in related fields such as arts administration, music therapy, and sound design.

Fees and Scholarships

The Bachelor of Music is a Commonwealth-supported program, with domestic students eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP). The indicative annual fee for domestic students is $9,343, while the total tuition fee for international students is $120,583. The University offers a range of scholarships and bursaries to support students, including the Domestic Students Scholarship and the International Students Scholarship.

The Bachelor of Music provides students with the opportunity to engage in research and creative projects, with a focus on music practice, performance, and creation. Students can explore a range of research areas, including music technology, music education, and musicology.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the Bachelor of Music, students will be able to:

• Apply and adapt specialist music skills and contextual knowledge to creative and scholarly practice
• Define and resolve complex musical problems applying core theoretical, analytic, and practical skills to contextual inquiry and creative outcomes
• Collaborate through performance and/or project work and interdisciplinary engagement to generate outcomes for public circulation
• Apply project management skills, and creative inquiry to produce distinctive creative music practice and/or music-related scholarship
• Exercise self-reflection, judgement, and responsibility in developing artistic practice and individual learning, in response to diverse professional, social, and/or cultural contexts.

Double Degree

The Bachelor of Music can be combined with a range of other degrees, including the Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Business, and Bachelor of Information and Communication Technology. This provides students with the opportunity to pursue multiple interests and career paths.

Complementary Major - Sustainability

The University offers a complementary major in Sustainability, which provides students with the opportunity to explore interdisciplinary knowledge and skills that underpin the development of sustainable societies and solutions. This major is available across most of the University's flexible bachelor's degrees and can be combined with the Bachelor of Music.
