Program Overview
Introduction to UniGO: Global Opportunity Program
The UniGO: Global Opportunity Program is a 25-credit point elective unit that offers students a unique opportunity to explore the connections between place, culture, technology, and sustainability. This immersive study experience takes place over the summer break in Indonesia, Malaysia, or Vietnam, where students engage with local leaders, visit sustainability initiatives, and develop their language skills.
Program Overview
- The program is designed to provide students with a hands-on education that combines adventure and cultural immersion.
- Students will learn about sustainability efforts in the context of their host country and visit a diverse range of initiatives delivered by not-for-profit and community groups.
- The program includes pre-departure workshops, a 4-week overseas trip, and post-trip workshops, culminating in a 25-credit point elective unit.
Key Dates
- Applications for UniGO 2027 will open from 28 April to 15 June 2026.
- Conditional offers will be made on a rolling basis, with applicants notified within 4-6 weeks of submitting their application.
- The unit commences with three weeks of mandatory pre-departure workshops from the end of November to mid-December each year.
- Travel will take place from early January to early February, followed by a mandatory post-trip workshop in mid-February.
Itineraries
- The program offers four different itineraries: Indonesia, Malaysia, Northern Vietnam, and Southern Vietnam.
- Each itinerary provides a unique cultural and sustainability-focused experience, with opportunities to engage with local communities and visit environmental sustainability initiatives.
Program Structure
Pre-Departure
- Students will complete a pre-travel module and attend mandatory pre-departure workshops, introducing them to key perspectives on environmental sustainability.
- Comprehensive guidance will be provided throughout the pre-departure process, including assistance with travel vaccinations and visa requirements.
- Students will complete Assessment Task 1 prior to departure in December.
In-Country
- The 4-week overseas trip will take place between 10 January and 7 February, accompanied by teaching staff and partners on the ground.
- Students will visit and contribute to a diverse range of environmental sustainability initiatives and engage with local partners, students, and community groups.
- Students will learn basic language skills through structured lessons and daily social interactions.
- Students will complete Assessment Tasks 2 and 3 in-country.
Post-Trip
- Students will attend a final mandatory post-trip workshop.
- Results are expected to be released in March, with graduation expected in August for students completing their degree.
Assignments
- Assessment Task 1: Group assignment (4-6 members per group) - Country environmental profile (Indonesia/Malaysia/Vietnam).
- Assessment Task 2: Individual reflection on two cultural encounters during the trip, submitted in written or video format.
- Assessment Task 3: Group assignment (4-6 members per group) - 12-minute video showcasing holistic sustainability lessons and basic language skills.
Eligibility
- Eligible degrees include various undergraduate programs in Sciences and Engineering, Health, Business and Economics, and Arts and Society.
- Students must have completed at least two units or 25 credit points by the end of Semester 1 and have elective space in their study plan.
- Students must meet the Student Eligibility Criteria outlined in the NCP's Mobility Guidelines.
Participation Requirements
- The program is committed to fostering an inclusive environment and encourages participation from students of all backgrounds.
- Reasonable adjustments will be made to support students with disabilities or other needs.
Fees and Costs
- Domestic Students: Tuition fee of $4,248 and a SSAF fee of $105.30 for enrolment in HOS201.
- International Students: Fee of $11,237.50 for the 25cp unit, with no SSAF fee.
- Travel fees, including flights, accommodation, visas, insurance, and meals, will be covered by the program, with some exceptions for domestic connecting flights or international airfares for students travelling from outside Australia.
Applying to UniGO
- Stage 1: Applications will open from 28 April to 15 June 2026, with conditional offers made on a rolling basis.
- Stage 2: Students who receive a conditional offer will progress to the second stage, where they will confirm/secure required documentation, including a valid Australian passport, Tasmanian Registration to Work With Vulnerable People, and a Health Declaration Form.
