Program Overview
Diploma of Music (F2W)
Overview
The Diploma of Music is designed for students who are interested in pursuing greater understanding and knowledge of the discipline of music. Its structure allows students to improve skills in either one or more broad areas of interest: ensemble skills, music history, music literacy skills, audio design, and music technology.
Duration
The minimum duration of this course is 1 year, and the maximum duration is 5 years. This course is available to study as both part-time or full-time.
Location
The course is available in Hobart, and the semester starts in Semester 1.
Course Structure
The Diploma of Music requires the completion of 100 credit points from the Introductory and Intermediate units in the schedule.
Introductory Units
- FCA106 - Music and Place: This unit introduces students to music and cultural expression in the Australian context.
- FCA107 - Music and Spectacle: This unit explores how music and the visual combine for spectacular effect.
- FCA111 - Music Practice 1: This unit focuses on the major area of musical expression and practice.
- FCA112 - Music Practice 2: This unit enables students to consolidate the core technical and artistic skills necessary for the creation and realisation of musical works.
- FCA119 - Tools and Techniques 2: This unit develops key practical and theoretical skills relating to the practice of music.
- FCA120 - Tools and Techniques 1: This unit establishes key practical and theoretical skills relating to the practice of music.
- FCE105 - Ensemble Skills 1: This unit introduces the skills required for ensemble performance and/or music production.
- FCE106 - Ensemble Skills 2: This unit develops the skills required for ensemble performance and/or music production.
Intermediate Units
- FCA201 - Arranging and Music Creation: This unit consolidates key practical and theoretical skills relating to the practice of music.
- FCA208 - Music and Politics: This unit explores the interrelationship between music and politics.
- FCA209 - Music and the Future: This unit examines what it means to be a musician in the future.
- FCE234 - Ensemble Skills 3: This unit continues the development of ensemble skills in performance and/or music production.
- FCE235 - Ensemble Skills 4: This unit consolidates the development of ensemble skills in performance and/or music production.
Entry Requirements
To be eligible for entry into the F2W Diploma of Music, students must meet the University of Tasmania's General Entry Requirements. Additionally, students who wish to enrol in FCA111 and/or FCE234 are required to successfully complete an audition and interview. This course does not use ATAR.
Credit Transfer
Students may be eligible for advanced standing (i.e., credit points) in this degree if they have successfully completed relevant units through the University Connections Program or have completed an award such as a Diploma or Advanced Diploma at the University, from TAFE, or another institution.
Fees and Scholarships
Domestic Students
- Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) are available for this course.
- The indicative annual fee for a Commonwealth Supported Place is $9,228.
- Students may be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government.

Career Outcomes
While the majority of graduates enter jobs related to music, these careers are incredibly diverse and often completely new. Musicians are often entrepreneurial, creating new forms of music and artistic expression, collaborating across industries to solve problems, or inspiring and engaging the next generation of musicians.
Further Study
Students who successfully complete the Diploma of Music may progress to the Bachelor of Music.
