Program Overview

Overview

The Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours is a comprehensive program designed to provide students with a hands-on education in engineering, filled with adventure and practical experience. The program aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to solve complex engineering problems, design and evaluate engineering components, systems, and processes, and contribute to the completion of real-world engineering projects.

Career Outcomes

The program prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities in engineering, including aerospace, biomedical, building and construction, civil and environmental engineering, computer systems, government agencies, health industry, industrial electronics, international development, manufacturing, mining and exploration, petrochemical, power generation and transmission, property development, renewable energy, robotics and automation, software engineering, structural engineering, telecommunications, and transport.

Course Structure

The Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours requires the completion of 425 credit points, comprising 212.5 credit points of core units, 187.5 credit points of specialisation, and 25 credit points of electives. The program includes a range of specialisations, including Civil Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

Core Units

The core units provide a foundation in engineering principles, including engineering design and communication, engineering problem-solving and data analysis, engineering statics, engineering dynamics, engineering circuits, and engineering materials.

Specialisations

Each specialisation provides a comprehensive education in a specific area of engineering, including:

  • Civil Engineering: focuses on designing, planning, and constructing infrastructure, including dams, bridges, pipelines, and buildings.
  • Electrical Power Engineering: focuses on the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilisation of electrical energy.
  • Electronics and Communications Engineering: focuses on the design, creation, and maintenance of electronic systems, including communication systems and networks.
  • Mechanical Engineering: focuses on the design, manufacture, assembly, commissioning, maintenance, safety, management, and development of policies for mechanical systems.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for admission, domestic students must have completed senior secondary studies, including Mathematics Methods (MTM) or equivalent and Physical Sciences (PSC) or equivalent. International students must have completed qualifications equivalent to a year 12 education in Australia and meet the English language requirements.

Fees and Scholarships

The program offers a range of scholarships, including the Sir William Tyree Engineering Scholarship, Cement Australia West North-West Bursary, TasPorts West North-West Bursary, TasWater Steve Balcombe Scholarship, and Waratah Wynyard Council Bill French Memorial Bursary. The Catalyst Program also provides domestic high-achieving school leavers with scholarships, extracurricular experiences, special events, and networking opportunities.

Research Areas

The program provides opportunities for students to engage in research projects, including the Formula SAE Competition, UniGO: Global Opportunity Program, and the Dean's Summer Research Scholarship. Students can also participate in work-integrated learning opportunities, including 12 weeks of industrial experience via work placement.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours is an externally accredited degree, with the following specialisations accredited by Engineers Australia: Civil, Electrical, Electronic and Communications, Electrical and Electronics, and Mechanical. Completion of a specialisation may meet the requirements for membership of Engineers Australia.
