Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering)

The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is a program designed for students who intend to embark on a career in the maritime industry as Marine Engineer Officers on commercial vessels. This course provides the knowledge and skills required to safely manage, facilitate, and undertake operation and maintenance linked to the shipboard marine engineering systems.


Course Overview

The program is fully compliant with the training and educational requirements of the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 2010 as amended. It integrates with professional short courses and training at sea, allowing successful students to obtain an Advanced Diploma or bachelor degree and an Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Certificate of Competency.

The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) is the recognised pathway to becoming an AMSA certified marine engineering officer. This degree provides additional knowledge and skills that will be of benefit to students seeking a career at sea. The degree will also equip professional engineering officers with the additional knowledge and skills that they are likely to require to take up senior shore-based professional positions.

The Advanced Diploma of Applied Science (Marine Engineering) requires the completion of 200 credit points as follows:

Entry Requirements

For International students:


  • English Language Requirements: IELTS (Academic) of 5.5, with no individual band less than 5.0, or a PTE Academic score of 43, with no score lower than 36 or equivalent.
  • General Entry Requirements: Admission to undergraduate courses at the University of Tasmania requires the completion of qualifications equivalent to a year 12 education in Australia.
  • Course Specific Requirements: Satisfactory achievement in General Mathematics (MTG) and Physical Sciences (PSC) or equivalent.

Fees & Scholarships

  • Domestic students: This is a full-fee course. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course.
  • International students: 2026 Total Tuition Fee (international students): $53,198 AUD
  • FEE-HELP loans: Available for domestic full-fee students.
