Program Overview


Overview

The Bachelor of Maritime Engineering (Specialisation) (Honours) is a four-year degree program that focuses on the design, construction, and operation of maritime infrastructure. The program is delivered through the Australian Maritime College (AMC) and is available to students who have completed the first two years of the Bachelor of Engineering (Maritime) (Honours) at Flinders University.


Entry Requirements

  • The program is available to domestic and international students.
  • Admission requirements are set forth in the Cooperative Education Agreement signed by the University of Tasmania and Flinders University.
  • Students must complete a Safe to Practice Agreement declaring they have the medical, physical, or psychological capacity to safely participate in professional experience practice.
  • International students must meet the minimum English Language Requirements, which include an IELTS (Academic) of 6.0, with no individual band less than 5.5, or a PTE Academic score of 50, with no score lower than 42.

Duration and Location

  • The program has a minimum duration of four years and a maximum duration of nine years.
  • The program is available to study as both part-time or full-time.
  • The program is delivered at the Launceston campus.

Course Structure

  • The program requires the completion of 400 credit points, comprising:
    • 300 credit points of core units
    • 75 credit points of specialization units
    • 25 credit points of elective units
  • The core units are compulsory for all students and consist of eight units in Year 1, eight units in Year 2, three units in Year 3, and five units in Year 4.
  • Students can choose from two specializations: Naval Architecture or Ocean Engineering.
  • Elective units can be chosen from any units marked as "Student Electives" which students meet the pre-requisites for, at any level, from across the university.

Specializations

Naval Architecture

  • The Naval Architecture specialization prepares graduates for careers in the shipbuilding industry, designing and constructing luxury super yachts, sailing and power craft, destroyers and patrol boats for the defense industry, underwater vehicles and submarines, and big ocean cruise liners.
  • Advanced units in this specialization include:
    • JEE329 Seakeeping and Manoeuvring
    • JEE333 Resistance and Propulsion
    • JEE335 Applied Ship Design
    • JEE363 Applied Hydrodynamics
    • JEE416 Advanced Ship Structures
    • JEE491 Underwater Vehicle Technology

Ocean Engineering

  • The Ocean Engineering specialization prepares graduates for careers designing and managing the installation of offshore, subsea, and coastal structures for the oil and gas industry, in particular, the offshore industry; the renewable energy industry; coastal and environmental engineering; marine consultancy firms; and ocean research organizations.
  • Advanced units in this specialization include:

    • JEE363 Applied Hydrodynamics
    • JEE364 Design for Offshore Energy

Career Outcomes

Fees and Scholarships

  • Domestic students may be eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), which means their fees will be subsidized by the Australian Government.
  • International students will need to pay the full tuition fee, which is $195,895 AUD for the 2026 academic year.
  • Scholarships are available for both domestic and international students, including the Tasmanian International Scholarships (TIS) and scholarships for domestic students.
