Program Overview
Master of Information Technology and Systems (K7I)
The Master of Information Technology and Systems (MITS) provides broad knowledge and practical skills across key areas of information technology (IT) and information systems (IS). It is designed for people from all backgrounds, not just those with IT experience, helping you build on your existing skills and strengthen your ability to contribute to industries that rely on technology and systems.
Overview
The MITS is a two-year (200 credit point) course, comprising core units, one technical specialisation, and a second specialisation or four cross-listed units. Students can customise their learning to suit their career goals by choosing from seven specialisations.

Cybersecurity Specialisation
The Cybersecurity specialisation prepares students for a career as a security specialist with the skills to develop and maintain secure ICT systems. Compulsory units include:

- KIT725 - Cybersecurity and eForensics
- KIT726 - System Administration and Security Assurance
Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence Specialisation
The Data Analytics and Artificial Intelligence specialisation prepares students for a career as a data analyst with the skills to design and implement intelligent ICT solutions using prevailing and emerging AI techniques. Compulsory units include:

Software Development Specialisation
The Software Development specialisation prepares students for a career as an applications, software, or web programmer with the skills to design and implement innovative ICT solutions using a range of programming languages and emerging technologies. Compulsory units include:

- KIT721 - Mobile Application Development

Systems Analysis Specialisation
The Systems Analysis specialisation prepares students for a career as a systems analyst with the skills to design and quality assure ICT solutions to support business processes and information management. Compulsory units include:
- KIT515 - Cybersecurity Policies and Practices
- KIT728 - Software Testing and Quality Management
- KIT729 - Knowledge and Information Strategic Management
- KIT730 - Business Process Innovation
Second Specialisation or 4 Cross-Listed Units
Students can undertake a second technical specialisation to develop depth in another field of ICT or choose four ICT units of their choice from any ICT specialisation.
ICT Research Specialisation
The ICT Research specialisation will give students the skills needed to plan and conduct an independent ICT-related research project. This specialisation is the pathway to a PhD for Master students.
Entry Requirements
For Domestic students:
- 16-unit masters (2 years): Students who do not hold a Bachelor or Graduate Certificate/Diploma in an ICT-related area from an accredited tertiary institution will be required to complete a 2-year, 16-unit masters.
- 12-unit masters (1.5 to 2 years): To qualify for a 12-unit MITS, students must currently hold a Bachelor degree in an ICT-related area or a Bachelor degree in any discipline and a Graduate Certificate/Diploma in an ICT-related area from an accredited tertiary institution.
For International students:
- Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania requires qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree.
- Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects, and meet English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.
English Language Requirements
- IELTS (Academic) 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0)
Fees & Scholarships
- Domestic students: This is a full-fee course, which means students will need to pay the full amount for their studies. Commonwealth Supported Places are not available in this course.
- International students: 2026 Total Tuition Fee (international students): $81,898 AUD
