Program Overview

Unit Overview

The Functional Biology of Animals unit, coded as KZA212, is a required course in the Zoology major. It provides a broad training in fundamental aspects of Zoology and, together with KPZ211, forms an essential basis for specialist studies in Zoology at the advanced level.

Introduction

This unit focuses on developing students' understanding of functional anatomy and comparative animal physiology from an evolutionary perspective. Lectures cover topics such as physiological integration and control, comparative physiology of circulation, respiration, excretion, and osmoregulation, and energy flow through systems. Practical classes aim to develop skills in observation, data collection and analysis, oral and written communication, and an appreciation of the comparative approach to the study of physiological adaptations in animals.
