Program Overview


Department of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Program

The University of Colorado School of Medicine Internal Medicine Residency Training Program is a comprehensive program that aims to provide residents with a well-rounded education and training in internal medicine.


Information for Applicants

The program accepts applications through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). The application deadline is September 24th, 2025, and applicants must submit their materials by 4 pm on Thursday, October 2nd, 2025.


  • Required application materials include:
    • CV
    • Transcript
    • Chair's or Departmental Letter
    • Three Letters of Recommendation (total of 4 letters)
    • USMLE Transcript
    • Personal Statement
  • Applicants must note all NRMP numbers for tracks they would like to be considered for.
  • Preliminary applicants applying to the categorical Neurology program at the University of Colorado must also apply to the Internal Medicine program for an interview by September 24th, 2025.

Requirements, Eligibility, and Selection

The program takes a holistic approach to reviewing applications, considering factors such as:


  • Diverse life experiences
  • Medical school performance (with a focus on clerkships and medicine sub-internship)
  • Community involvement and engagement
  • Scholarly work
  • Demonstration of leadership qualities
  • The program does not have a set USMLE or COMLEX cut-off score, but most applicants score above 235 on USMLE Step 2.
  • USMLE Step 2 scores are not required at the time of application but must be completed before starting residency.
  • The program strongly recommends having one month of clinical experience in a U.S. healthcare system.

Requirements

  • Applications must be submitted electronically through ERAS.
  • International medical graduates must apply through an ECFMG office.
  • The program requires a chairman's letter and three letters of recommendation (total of 4 letters).
  • Residents in the program must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, asylee, or possess the appropriate documentation to allow a resident to legally train at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.
  • Residents must be vaccinated against all standard vaccine series required to work in a medical environment.

Entry Requirements

The Department of Medicine at the University of Colorado does not discriminate with regard to age, sex, race, religion, national origin, disability, or Veteran status.


  • Certification by the National Board of Medical Examiners (NBME), the National Board of Osteopathic Medicine (NBOME), or the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) is required.
  • International medical graduates must hold a valid ECFMG certificate, have a full, unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction, or have completed a Fifth Pathway program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

International Medical Graduates

The University of Colorado's International Student and Scholar Services office is a great resource for international medical graduates.


  • The program accepts International Medical Graduates (IMGs) from diverse backgrounds.
  • IMGs must be ECFMG certified at the time of application or far enough along in the application process that they will receive certification no later than February 1 of the year in which they plan to match.
  • The program sponsors both J1 and H1B visas.
  • USMLE Step 3 is required to apply if applying for an H1B visa.
  • The program recommends at least one month of hands-on clinical experience in a U.S. healthcare system, but it is not required.
