Program Overview
Primary Care Residency Program
The Primary Care Residency Program is designed to provide broad training for general internists. The program is linked to the categorical program, and many categorical graduates eventually choose careers in primary care.
Program Structure
- The program recruits 9 Primary Care Interns per year, with a total of 27 residents in the Primary Care Track.
- The overall internal medicine residency program has 71 R1s, 53 R2s, 56 R3s, and 7 Chief Residents, for a grand total of 187.

Research Opportunities
- The program offers multiple opportunities for clinical research within the Division of General Internal Medicine.
- Residents can set aside a designated research month in their second or third years.
- There is also a Clinical and Basic Science Program offered through the Graduate School at the University for those individuals interested in obtaining a Ph.D. along with fellowship training.
Benefits and Policies
- All house staff are guaranteed a minimum of 4 days off each rotation.
- The program has a 100% pass rate for the Internal Medicine Board exam.
- There are admission caps at each hospital, with R1s admitting a maximum of 5 new patients in 24 hours and R2s and R3s admitting a maximum of 10 new patients in 24 hours.
