Program Overview


Division of General Internal Medicine

The Division of General Internal Medicine is a part of the School of Medicine, offering various programs and research opportunities.


Primary Care Residency Program

The Primary Care Residency Program is designed to provide residents with a comprehensive education in primary care medicine.


Program Structure

The program structure includes:


  • A primary care intern year with a group of 9 PC Interns per year
  • A longitudinal clinic experience in the second and third years
  • A pathway selection in the second year to further develop skills in a professional area of interest
  • Monday morning Clinic Didactics during clinic blocks
  • Wednesday Educational Sessions weekly during Ambulatory blocks

Primary Care Intern Year

The primary care intern year includes:


  • PC intern schedules aligned to take in-patient rotations together at the same time, ambulatory rotations at the same time
  • Preference submission for continuity clinic home location within Denver Health's safety network of Federally Qualified Health Centers
  • Additional 4 PC Intern half-day educational sessions in July and 4 PC Intern half-day educational sessions in January
  • Wednesday Educational Sessions with the larger Internal Medicine class on ambulatory topics
  • Monday morning Clinic Didactics during clinic blocks with Denver Health clinic residents

Primary Care R2 Year

The primary care R2 year includes:


  • Selection of a longitudinal clinic to develop primary care specialty skills
  • Selection of a pathway to further develop skills in a professional area of interest
  • Monday morning Clinic Didactics during clinic blocks with opportunities to teach outpatient topics to resident colleagues
  • Wednesday Educational Sessions weekly during Ambulatory blocks

Primary Care R3 Year

The primary care R3 year includes:


  • Continuation of the longitudinal clinic and pathway selected in the R2 year
  • Monday morning Clinic Didactics during clinic blocks with opportunities to teach outpatient topics to resident colleagues
  • Wednesday Educational Sessions weekly during Ambulatory blocks

PC Electives

The program offers a wide selection of PC priority electives, particularly with a focus on underserved care.
