Program Overview
The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine offers a comprehensive fellowship program designed to provide trainees with the necessary experience to become accomplished specialists, excellent clinician-teachers, and clinical researchers.
Clinical Training
The first year of the program is designed to provide fully structured clinical work, with responsibilities including:
- Management of patients with acute medical problems admitted to intensive care units
- Management of patients with chronic respiratory insufficiency due to various conditions
- Handling large numbers of consultations and providing advice for consulting physicians
- Performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures
- Learning the principles and interpretation of pulmonary physiology
- Participating in outpatient continuity clinics and attending weekly grand rounds and conferences
Research Pathways
The research training will be in either the Clinician Scientist or the Basic Investigator Pathway. The Clinician Scientist Pathway involves coursework in the School of Public Health or the Masters in Clinical Science program, while the Basic Investigator Pathway requires the Department of Medicine's Basic Science course.
Program Structure
The program is divided into three years, with the option of a fourth year for those pursuing a Ph.D. The second year is devoted to specific research training, while the third year is a continuation of the second year experience. The fourth year is optional and provides continuity of research for those desiring it.
Clinician Educator Track
The Clinician Educator track has the following career development elements:
- Protected time to develop medical education scholarship
- Training to improve the fellow's ability to teach
- A focus on a subspecialty niche to provide added value to the fellow's future career
- Attendance at monthly Medical Education Working Group meetings
- Regular meetings with two co-mentors and a Career Advisory Committee

Fellowship Details
The fellowship program includes:
- A weekly half-day continuity clinic
- Rotations of advanced lung disease training
- Critical care rotations at various hospitals
- Attendance at conferences and grand rounds
- Opportunities for presenting research at national meetings
- Support for attending the annual American Thoracic Society meeting
Ph.D. Program
A Ph.D. program in Health Services Research, Clinical Investigation, or Basic Sciences is possible within the confines of a four-year program.
