Program Overview

Introduction to the Surgical Pathology Fellowship Program

The Department of Pathology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine offers a one-year fellowship program providing advanced training and experience in general surgical pathology, based at the University of Colorado Hospital Anschutz Medical Campus. The University of Colorado Hospital is an NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center and sees approximately 45,000 surgical pathology cases per year, both malignant and nonmalignant entities, and covers all subspecialties.

Program Structure

The fellowship consists of approximately 10 months of rotations across all surgical pathology subspecialties, in addition to the frozen section service. While rotating, the fellow individually works up cases in a self-directed manner, with feedback and instruction obtained from the assigned faculty during regular clinical practice workflow. In addition, the fellow is responsible for presenting at a variety of multidisciplinary conferences, serving as a resource for residents in regards to grossing and microscopy, and teaching medical students in small group sessions. Elective time of up to 8 weeks is provided, and can be tailored to individually meet the needs of the fellow. Elective time may be used to focus on a subspecialty area, perform research activities, or spent rotating in other areas of anatomic and/or clinical pathology. While a formal research project is not expected, scholarly activity during the year is encouraged.

Requirements

  • Applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of medicine or osteopathy.
  • Applicants must be eligible for medical licensure in the state of Colorado.
  • Applicants must be board-eligible or board-certified in AP or AP/CP by the start of the fellowship term.
