Introduction to the Gates Summer Internship Program

The Gates Summer Internship Program (GSIP) is a key educational initiative of the Gates Institute, aiming to advance cell and gene therapy research by empowering undergraduates to join the next generation of scientific leaders pursuing careers in regenerative medicine.

Program Details

The GSIP is a full-time, paid 11-week training program where interns work in a Gates Institute member's laboratory and participate in weekly GSIP seminars, social events, and community service. They present their summer research project in a poster session at the end of the program symposium.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

GSIP is open to undergraduates in a science-related major who are enrolled in an undergraduate program at the time of application. Former GSIP interns are encouraged to apply. The program also welcomes international students who possess an F1 visa and are enrolled in a U.S. college or university.

• Application requirements include:
  • Two letters of recommendation, with at least one from a previous or current science professor.
  • A CV or Resume detailing experience, academic background, research, awards, publications, presentations, community service, skills, and credentials.
  • Transcript(s), with unofficial transcripts accepted for the application and official transcripts required upon acceptance.

Selection Process

A committee of Gates Institute faculty and staff selects highly qualified undergraduates to work full-time in laboratories at the CU Anschutz.

Stipend, Transportation, Parking, and Housing

• Stipend: Interns are awarded a stipend of $7,000, paid in bi-monthly installments via direct deposit over the 11-week program.
• Transportation: A higher stipend is provided to help offset housing and transportation costs.
• Parking: Paid parking is available on the Anschutz Medical Campus, with public transportation also available in the Denver metro area.
• Housing: The program does not provide housing, but resources are available.
