Urology Residency Training Program
Program Overview
Introduction to the CU Urology Residency Program
The CU Urology Residency Program is a comprehensive five-year program designed to provide residents with the skills and knowledge necessary to become expert urologists. The program is based at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus and offers a unique blend of clinical and surgical training, research opportunities, and mentorship.
Education
The program's educational curriculum is designed to provide residents with a thorough understanding of urology, including the diagnosis, treatment, and management of urological disorders. Residents will participate in a variety of educational activities, including lectures, seminars, and case conferences.
Training Sites
The program utilizes several training sites, including:
- University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center
- Children's Hospital Colorado
- Rocky Mountain Regional VA Medical Center
- Denver Health Medical Center
Each training site provides a unique learning environment and exposes residents to a diverse range of patients and cases.
Mentorship and Coaching
The program places a strong emphasis on mentorship and coaching, with each resident being assigned a mentor who will provide guidance and support throughout their training. The program also offers a coaching program, which is designed to help residents develop the skills and strategies necessary to succeed in their careers.
Program Timeline
The program is divided into five years, with each year building on the previous one. The first year (URO-1) is spent completing core and sub-specialty surgical rotations, as well as urology rotations. The remaining four years (URO-2 to URO-5) are dedicated to surgical, clinical, and didactic urology, with residents progressing to more advanced levels of training and responsibility.
URO-1 Year (PGY-1)
During the URO-1 year, residents will participate in six months of core and sub-specialty surgical rotations, including general surgery, critical care, plastics, and trauma. The remaining six months will be spent on urology rotations.
URO-2 to URO-5 Years (PGY-2 to PGY-5)
Residents will participate in clinical rotations, research rotations, and didactic urology. They will also have the opportunity to progress to more advanced levels of training and responsibility, with graded authority and responsibility based on specific criteria.
Research Rotation
Each resident will participate in a four-month research rotation, which is designed to provide them with the tools and resources necessary to learn investigative urology. At the end of the rotation, residents are expected to have accumulated enough data to present an abstract at a major scientific meeting and/or result in at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
Program for Unmatched Applicants
The program also offers a preliminary PGY-1 year for individuals who did not match into urology and are planning to reapply. This program provides a unique opportunity for individuals to gain additional clinical experience and exposure to the faculty and residents of the urology training program.
