The University College Cork (UCC) Sport Performance Programme is designed to support UCC athletes in developing and performing to their full potential. The programme prioritizes student athlete welfare, ensuring that sport in UCC is an enjoyable and positive experience.
About UCC Sports Performance Programme
The purpose of the UCC Sport performance programme is to support UCC athletes in developing and performing to their full potential. The programme is aimed at sports scholarship students, leading teams, and athletes performing at top-level sport in UCC and at regional, national, and international levels.
What the Performance Programme Entails
The performance programme is based on four key pillars:
- Programme management and support
- Sports performance
- Strength and Conditioning (S&C), Sport Physiology Support, and Sports Medicine Support
- Academic and Life skills Support
Vision, Goals, and Outcomes
- Vision: Supporting UCC students in reaching and developing their full potential in performance sport, with a focus on their welfare and wellbeing.
- Goals:
- UCC students enjoying, developing, and performing in their sport.
- UCC students completing their academic programmes.
- UCC teams and individuals competing and achieving success in 3rd level and national competitions.
- UCC student athletes achieving highest representative honours.
- Outcomes:
- UCC player athlete welfare support and satisfaction
- Results in performance competitions (top 4 and wins)
- UCC Performance Athletes on top-level squads
- Performance Athletes progressing through academic programmes
- Delivery of quality services and support
How to Apply
The application process for the scholarship programme is open. Applications can be submitted through the UCC Sport website.
Sport Success
UCC was well represented in the 2024 Olympic Games and other high-level sporting activities during the year. Notable achievements include:
- Rowing: UCC alumni Paul O'Donovan and Fintan McCarthy won the gold medal in the Men's Lightweight double scull event.
- Athletics: UCC alumnus Phil Healy was a member of the women's 4 x 400m relay team that finished fourth in the Olympic Games.
- Camogie: Several UCC students were part of the Cork team that won the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Final 2024.
- Hockey: UCC students Julia McCarthy and Robyn Murphy were part of the Irish U21 hockey team that competed in the U21 Eurohockey Championships.
Student Athletes and Scholarships
UCC offers various sport scholarships to support student athletes in their academic and sporting pursuits. The scholarships provide funding, access to support services, and academic support to help student athletes achieve their full potential.
Facilities
UCC has a range of sports facilities, including the Mardyke Sports Grounds and the Curraheen Sports Grounds. The university also has a Human Performance Lab that provides support services for student athletes.
