Digital Badge in Autism Awareness for University Staff
Program Overview
Digital Badge in Autism Awareness for University Staff
The Digital Badge in Autism Awareness for University Staff is a comprehensive introduction to autism, its effects on students in higher education, and strategies for creating an autism-friendly environment. This badge is designed for staff across all university services and departments to understand and support autistic students better.
Purpose of the Digital Badge
The purpose of this Digital Badge is to introduce staff to what autism is, its implications for students in higher education, and how small changes in practice can significantly improve the university experience for autistic students. Given that over 1 in 100 people are on the autism spectrum, staff awareness and understanding are crucial for recognizing potential challenges and enabling autistic students to participate fully in university life.
Learning Outcomes and Assessment
The learning outcomes for this digital badge include:
- Outlining the defining features of autism and different perspectives on what it means to be autistic
- Recognizing the diversity of experiences of autistic students and the factors shaping their experiences
- Identifying potential challenges for autistic students within the context of the staff member's role or department
- Reflecting on insights gained to adapt practice or contribute to making the department or service more autism-friendly
Upon completion, participants submit a reflection outlining at least two examples of how they can apply their learning to create a more autism-friendly approach. The reflection should be equivalent to approximately 500 written words, with flexibility in format.
Feedback from Participants
Previous participants have praised the digital badge for its comprehensive introduction to autism, its challenges, and strategies for support. They highlighted the value of hearing directly from autistic individuals about their university experiences and the practical guidance offered for making university services more inclusive.
