Program Overview

Dancing about Architecture Workshop

The Dancing about Architecture workshop is a performative, interdisciplinary event that explores the methodologies and sensibilities of dance, somatic practices, architecture, and engineering. This workshop aims to propose new forms of transdisciplinary collaboration between these disciplines.

About the Workshop

The workshop asserts that creative practice disciplines, such as dance, have untapped methodological potential for transdisciplinary collaboration. It welcomes participants from dance, architecture, and engineering, as well as those from outside these disciplines, to take part in a series of movement-based explorations and reflections on physical space.

Workshop Leaders

The workshop is led by a group of international experts in transdisciplinary collaboration from dance and architecture, including:

  • Diego Gil (Senselab Montréal)
  • Vicky Hunter (Reader in Site-Dance & Choreography at University of Chichester)
  • Caroline Salem (Choreographer, Mentor, and Dramaturg)
  • Ed Frith (Architect & specialist in Architecture & Performativity, Art University Bournemouth)

Who is the Workshop For?

The workshop is designed for:

  • Practitioners, academics, and PhD students from dance, somatic practice, architecture, and engineering
  • Anyone outside these disciplines interested in transdisciplinary collaboration involving creative practice disciplines
  • Anyone with an open interest in the processes and potential of transdisciplinary collaboration involving creative practice disciplines

What Will the Workshop Be Like?

The workshop will be performative, with mentors providing concentrated inputs to the whole group in the mornings, followed by smaller group project work in the afternoons. It is not a workshop where architects and engineers are taught to dance, but rather an event where participants will engage in movement-based explorations and reflections.

Commitment

Participants are asked to commit to the full three days of the workshop.
